Cells derive energy from one type of chemical reaction called Redox (Reduction and Oxidation) in your Mitochondria which makes up the Respiratory Chain.
The process transfers one or more electrons from a donor (Oxidized) to a receptor (Reduced).
This is not a direct process but goes through 'stepping stones'.
The process goes through 15 or more of these stepping stones called clusters/centers.
The clusters are are inorganic crystals known as 'iron-sulphur clusters'.
These clusters are spaced out at ~14 angstroms, where electrons hop from one to the next via Quantum Tunneling.
This distance is critical as because it makes the likelihood of electron transfer 0 if they are slightly further apart.
This means less energy production.
What affects the distance between these centers?
One of the biggest factors are the interactions between your Nuclear and Mitochondrial Genomes.
Your Mitochondrial Genes can accumulate mutations up to 50x faster than your Nuclear genes.
