What is Muharram and what Shia's do in Majlis ? : A Thread 🧵
Muharram is the first month of the Islamic Calendar and the tenth day of this month called Ashura, marks the martyrdom of Imam Hussain(a) with His companions.
In many places all around the world, people are getting busy. Some are putting alam in their house; others are buying tabaruk to give it in the majlis. Children are learning noha and doing matam.
What is an alam?

An alam is like a flag to remind us of the banner that used to be carried in a battle. When the Prophet Muhammad(saw) had to fight against his enemies, Imam Ali(a) carried it in the battle of Khaibar. Hazrat Abbas(a) was given the alam in Karbala.
Why do we have majlis?

A majlis is a meeting to learn about Islam and Karbala. This is a gathering in remembrance of the great tragedy of Karbala and the events afterwards.
Bibi Zainab(sa) held the first majlis in the city of
Damascus to tell everybody about Imam
Hussain(a).
These gatherings are gender segregated. The Majlis starts with a recitation of Hadees e Kisa in Arabic. This is followed by Soz Khawani, which is a recitation by a group of poetic verses on many topics, some pleasant and others tragic.
As they recite verses in praise of Allah, his last Prophet & His family the crowd smiles & nods encouragingly. As topics turn to tragic events of Karbala, eyes wet with tears.
The Marsiya is a tragic poetic narration & always starts with a Surat Fatiha for all martyrs of Karbala.
Next is time for Hadees which is a lecture given by a Zakir, an orator, or an Alim. It starts with one verse of the Quran & its explanation, & applicability to our daily lives & challenges. The end, tragic event of Karbala is narrated & the mood again changes to that of mourning.
The Majlis concludes with Noha and Matam. A noha is a sad poem to tell the story of
Karbala and matam is done to show that
you wish you were there to help the Imam. At the end of the majlis, we give
tabarruk in the name of the Imam to everyone who comes to remember him.
An average Majlis from start to end is 1.5 to 2 hours long but you can join and leave at any point. The Majlis happens at Azakhana, Mosque or at a house. You do not need an invite to attend a Majlis and everyone is welcome.

The journey for Karbala started on 28th Rajab, 60A.H., From Madina to Mecca.
When everybody doing preparation for journey, Bibi Sughra(sa) watched lying in bed, too ill even to get up. No one was saying anything about her going. She decided to wait till her father’s return. She lay on bed praying that her father would agree to take her with him to Karbala
