I just had a realization about what tankieism is. I'd always sort of considered it part of the same turn towards nationalist authoritarianism that produced the new fascist right but what I didn't understand is that they ARE the counter-revolution.

That's the entire point, to be the counter-revolution to the 2011 revolutions. Those revolutions sole unifying demand was "the people want the fall of the regime". Tankieism as an ideology is meant to convince people that what they actually want
