Here is a complete up to date thread of all the missing or altered Jared Leto Joker scenes from David Ayer's cut of Suicide Squad

We've waited SIX YEARS....and the hype of this video is still unmatched 👇

#ReleaseTheAyerCut @discoveryplus @WarnerMedia

We were meant to actually SEE the Joker's electroshock treatment he mentions in the extended cut, with Harley there supervising as his doctor.

Would've made her lobotomy more impactful - the tables are turned.
#ReleaseTheAyerCut @discoveryplus @WarnerMedia

Joker & Harley's emotionally layered "Mad Love" style interactions were reduced to blink-and-you'll-miss-them neon jumpcuts in theatrical

Take their therapy session...they filmed an entire CONVERSATION, not just one or two lines
#ReleaseTheAyerCut @discoveryplus @WarnerMedia

(BTS footage of the therapy session)

"I appreciate that" - we don't know what Joker's referring to here concerning Harley. It's possible the "itsy bitsy favour" he wants is for her to get him a machine gun, like theatrical.
#ReleaseTheAyerCut @discoveryplus

Joker's men breaking him out of Arkham was intended as its own entire action sequence, serving as part of the film's intro.

Imagine taking Joker's bank heist from TDK and cutting it down to just a few seconds for a quick "highlight montage" 🤦‍♂️
#ReleaseTheAyerCut #JokerThe13th @discoveryplus

The original movie wouldn't have shied away from a more demented Joker...this includes him beating a guard to death with Harley's future bat.

You can glimpse it in the background of the breakout during theatrical.
#ReleaseTheAyerCut #JokerThe13th @discoveryplus

A much longer, more intense, and SADISTIC version of Harley's electroshock "treatment". The exchange between her & Joker in theatrical doesn't even last a minute, and half of it was reshot. We missed;

- Joker punching the bed
#ReleaseTheAyerCut @discoveryplus @WarnerMedia

- Joker taking a second to chill & relax

(either calming himself down from that punch, or maybe he just got done shocking Harley, since we know they filmed what happened after)
#ReleaseTheAyerCut @discoveryplus #JokerThe13th

- Joker aggressively shining the lamp right in Harley's face as she pleads
#ReleaseTheAyerCut @discoveryplus

All of these jumpcuts (except maybe the last one) were reshoots, serving the studio mandate of making Jared's performance more "edgy" than scary.
#ReleaseTheAyerCut @discoveryplus @WarnerMedia

- The original line delivery for "I'm gonna hurt you really, really bad"

- Joker pulling a cruel fake-out, pretending he's gonna shock Harley without even the leather strap for her to bite down on
#ReleaseTheAyerCut @discoveryplus

- Extra dialogue as Joker's gagging her (inaudible from the BTS reel)

Before moving on, keep in mind that one of his goons "Pandaman" and a fellow inmate are also present, to the left & right of the room

He's talking to them in the next clip
#ReleaseTheAyerCut @discoveryplus

Harley is completely still, no movement, so Joker must be done shocking her. Sounds like "Pandaman" took the opportunity and made a vulgar sexual comment, establishing him as a creep.

Joker calls him out, before erupting at the mental patient.
#ReleaseTheAyerCut @discoveryplus @WarnerMedia

Joker grabbing his coat to leave
#ReleaseTheAyerCut @discoveryplus

Rather than let his right-hand Jonny Frost put her down...Joker makes the conscious decision to spare Harley's life. This is where the finger waggle from the Bohemiam Rhapsody trailer belongs.
#ReleaseTheAyerCut @discoveryplus @WarnerMedia

Joker & Harley dancing in theatrical is merely used as a transition from her lobotomy to them at the club, spliced with more awful jumpcuts

In reality, they choreographed an entire waltz in homage to the Alex Ross art
#ReleaseTheAyerCut @discoveryplus

Linked below is an article from 2015 of them shooting a noticeably different take for the motorcycle flashback

- Harley yells "get outta the car!"
- Joker seems more flamboyant than the extended cut
- He BACKHANDS her

batman-news.com/2015/05/17/jok…
#ReleaseTheAyerCut @discoveryplus @WarnerMedia

The slap leaves no doubt this is from Ayer's movie. In theatrical, after retrieving his gun, Joker simply tells Harley to go away and the scene ends

Probably our BEST example of studio interference to make them less abusive
#ReleaseTheAyerCut @discoveryplus @WarnerMedia

In theatrical, Ace Chemicals opens with Harley looking down at the acid vats...but this BTS clip seems like it should go right before, where Joker has to turn and convince her to join him at the edge of the platform
#ReleaseTheAyerCut @discoveryplus

These cuts make it obvious there are lines missing

- Joker's standing up straight, but then outta nowhere he's slightly hunched

- From one shot to the next; Joker's left arm is raised, then suddenly BOTH hands are almost cupping Harley's face
#ReleaseTheAyerCut @discoveryplus

Even the AUDIO is out of sync; Joker's mouth is visibly moving here before his actual dialogue. Look close and pay attention, you'll see.

Mistakes like this should never be in the final cut. Embarassing.
#ReleaseTheAyerCut @discoveryplus

The club flashback may have suffered the worst editing;

Joker showing off the gimmick behind his hand's smiley tattoo was filmed twice...WB just chose the least threatening take, hence why it doesn't come across as scary. Leto was sabotaged.
#ReleaseTheAyerCut @discoveryplus

Harley's stage performance in the background was supposed to be MUCH more elaborate - even Margot's work got put through the shredder.

Judging from the novelisation, this still of Joker is right when he catches "Monster T" staring at her.
#ReleaseTheAyerCut @discoveryplus

Joker "plays" a bit more with Monster T before calling Harley over; again underlining how this version intimidates people (ignoring personal space, twisting their words etc)

Much of this scene was also apparently improvised according to @common
#ReleaseTheAyerCut @discoveryplus

In theatrical, Harley's cartwheel off the stage to Joker's booth was a split second jumpcut - part of the flashy neon intro Geoff Johns commissioned

Ayer simply wanted a cool acrobatics shot. WB entirely cut all the rest.
#ReleaseTheAyerCut @discoveryplus

Rather than Joker simply shooting Monster T for letting Harley come onto him (theatrical) the original ending was MUCH darker...

While she's fondling her hair, Joker decides if Monster T won't accept Harley as his "gift" he should just kill her
#ReleaseTheAyerCut @discoveryplus

BTS footage of Joker sitting down, and Harley getting up, for Monster T to take the shot. This highlights just how bad an influence Joker is on her; she's a victim but still psychotic & dangerous.

Ayer's Harley was truly complex.
#ReleaseTheAyerCut @discoveryplus

Crumbling under Joker & Harley's mind games, Monster T bites the bullet (literally) and shoots himself, as confirmed by the novelisation & Ayer directly

Their hysterical reaction would transition us to the next scene...
#ReleaseTheAyerCut @discoveryplus

THE BATFLECK CAR CHASE - a 30 second joyride (theatrical) isn't worth paying to film on the streets of Toronto

WB literally cut this scene in half all to make Joker & Harley less abusive 🤦‍♂️ No trace of him being mad at her, rearranged shots etc
#ReleaseTheAyerCut @discoveryplus

After blaming Harley for the club incident with Monster T...the sight of the batmobile gets Joker's attention and they stop arguing.
#ReleaseTheAyerCut @discoveryplus

This is where Harley's "hope you got insurance" quip from the SDCC trailer belongs. Joker might have even been visibly unimpressed 😅 Also...

- Potential unused camera angle?
- Harley "biting" at Joker...goading him to drive even faster?
#ReleaseTheAyerCut @discoveryplus

The following GIFs could be from either the start of this scene (before Batman shows up) or the actual car chase with him. It's impossible to tell;

- Harley pointing for Joker to swerve left
#ReleaseTheAyerCut @discoveryplus

- Whatever Harley says to Joker here makes him smile
#ReleaseTheAyerCut @discoveryplus

- Joker punching the roof (from the trailers)

Either cutting Harley off mid-sentence during their fight, or Batman's mounted the car and Joker's telling him to fck off 😅
#ReleaseTheAyerCut @discoveryplus

Batman was meant to BLOWTORCH the car roof open 🔥 Joker seems to react almost blissful - face that says "ahhh good one bats....you and your toys"
#ReleaseTheAyerCut @discoveryplus

Also worth mentioning...THIS is what prompts Harley to shoot Batman. You can even tell Joker’s laughing at him instead of her.

(the orange glow is from sparks, not the gun being fired)
#ReleaseTheAyerCut @discoveryplus

Batman saving Harley was extended compared to theatrical; he even mentions Robin (Dick Grayson) before it cuts to the next scene.
#ReleaseTheAyerCut @discoveryplus

Instead of a short trippy montage during Harley's first scene, Ayer guided us through the whole aftermath of her getting apprehended that night

We would've seen clear as day the abusive HELL where Joker abandoned her, no neon edits or jumpcuts
#ReleaseTheAyerCut @discoveryplus

PRESENT DAY - the circle of knives. This scene had proper dark background context that was 100% neutered in theatrical

Close ups on Joker would've immediately established him as drunk, hence the state of his room. The novelisation reflects this
#ReleaseTheAyerCut @discoveryplus

In the novelisation, when Jonny Frost enters to deliver news on Harley, he's careful with Joker in this volatile state. It's like walking on eggshells.

The original SCENE had the same underlying tension.
#ReleaseTheAyerCut @discoveryplus

A woman in the background dressed like Harley was digitally removed: similar to BTAS, Joker deals with losing her by trying out replacements & killing them when they don't measure up....

A far cry from his depressed pining in theatrical.
#ReleaseTheAyerCut @discoveryplus

Joker's meeting with Harley's abusive warden "Griggs" was partially improvised like the club scene....apparently in one take Leto full on KISSED him 😅

Also, see how Griggs is wearing tiger print? Maybe that's why Joker purrs to indimidate him
#ReleaseTheAyerCut @discoveryplus

"We're gonna have so much fun together."
#ReleaseTheAyerCut @discoveryplus

Many rumours have spun off from this line about the original cut actually SHOWING what Joker does to Griggs. Rumours....for now atleast.
#ReleaseTheAyerCut @discoveryplus

Before Joker texts Harley during her helicopter ride with the squad, there may have been a whole scene of him and his men gearing up to rescue her
#ReleaseTheAyerCut @discoveryplus

David shared a photo from this potential "let's roll out" scene last year. Joker banging his head on the car window, from the trailers, must be AFTER he texted Harley...he probably just saw her chooper crash.
#ReleaseTheAyerCut @discoveryplus

According to Jonny Frost's actor, this BTS footage of Joker is from a deleted scene where he surprises a judge in his hotel room, and threatens him for where the squad's nanobombs are made...
#ReleaseTheAyerCut @discoveryplus

This is where Joker was driving when he texted Harley; he's rocking the same outfit. No doubt another scene WB cut because it was "too dark"

We can't have Joker be an actual menacing, heinous villain 😒
#ReleaseTheAyerCut @discoveryplus

The nanobomb lab raid....like the Arkham shootout & car chase with Batman, WB stripped this scene down until it was barely even a minute long

Joker sees the guy they blew up at the entrance is still alive, and finishes him off with a punch
#ReleaseTheAyerCut @discoveryplus

In general we would've seen Joker actually DOING alot more stuff as part of the raid - he is meant to be leading it after all.

Namely him actively searching for Dr Van Criss, instead of theatrical where they find him almost immediately.
#ReleaseTheAyerCut @discoveryplus

Paying attention to BTS footage, you might notice part of the *script* for this scene. Can't quite make out those lines of dialogue but if I had to guess....looks like Jonny Frost speaking to Dr Van Criss?

Also hey - Pandaman face reveal 👀
#ReleaseTheAyerCut @discoveryplus

Rather than the scene abruptly ENDING when Van Criss gets a taste of his own nanobombs (typical Joker humour lol) Ayer kept it moving

Almost looks like Joker's comforting the poor doctor....after literally injecting him with a bomb 😅
#ReleaseTheAyerCut @discoveryplus

The raid would end with Joker checking out all the lab's fancy tech
#ReleaseTheAyerCut @discoveryplus

Harley's helicopter rescue - theatrical makes it seem like a romantic gesture and paints the Joker out to be her saviour. His dialogue ("come on baby"), the editing, the score etc.

This however feels *way* less romanticised; BTS of an alt take
#ReleaseTheAyerCut @discoveryplus

This GIF is actually three I had to merge together; that's because only the first part, where Joker's leaned back firing off his AK, is actually in the movie.

The rest got cut...even though it's obviously meant as one continuous laugh.
#ReleaseTheAyerCut @discoveryplus

Nearly all of Joker & Harley's reunion on the helicopter was reshot, since they originally fillmed it around their dynamic being ABUSIVE.

Joker proclaiming he'd "do anything" for her is a rewrite, which also explains why he sounds so dubbed.
#ReleaseTheAyerCut @discoveryplus

Instead of a passionate kiss, or even a hug, Harley is greeted by Joker giving her cold shoulder...based on the novel it's simply all his pent up frustration about the sheer trouble of rescuing her.
#ReleaseTheAyerCut @discoveryplus

Small detail when Joker's chopper is shot down that gets overlooked; Pandaman once again OUT of his costume.

Ayer bothering to include that just shows how even minor characters like Joker's henchmen got more development in his cut.
#ReleaseTheAyerCut @discoveryplus

The helicopter crash:

Theatrical - Joker & Harley try landing on a rooftop together, but the exploding chopper knocks her out, seperating them

Original - Joker PUSHES Harley out *expecting* her to land on a rooftop; carelessly risking her life
#ReleaseTheAyerCut @discoveryplus

THIRD ACT JOKER CAMEO - he interrupts the squad's fight with Enchantress, slightly burned from the helicopter crash, and makes a deal with her to be "King of Gotham" alongside Harley.

Script, concept art, and Ayer's confirmation tweet;
#ReleaseTheAyerCut @discoveryplus

Last year, David shared footage FROM HIS CUT of this third act scene. Joker is either addressing the squad and their sudden "heroic" turn, or Harley for choosing them over him. It's impossible to say,
#ReleaseTheAyerCut @discoveryplus

Here we get the climax of Ayer's character arc for Harley; she turns down Joker to help the squad vs Enchantress. Friendship over abuse.

He seems genuinely hurt for a moment...before quickly snapping out of it, chucking a grenade, and leaving.
#ReleaseTheAyerCut @discoveryplus

FINALLY - the ending with Joker breaking Harley out was far less of a happy "lovebirds reunited" cliffhanger...because she rejected him, it was more a kidnapping 😳
