Priti Patel writes in the Telegraph says vulnerable Afghans face a "chilling future".
But she warns that "Britain cannot do it alone" just after Emmanuel Macron spoke of need for Europe to "protect ourselves against major irregular migratory flows"
Priti Patel tells @KayBurley any resettlement scheme must be deliverable - hence 5,000 in first year.
"We cannot accommodate 20,000 people in one go", she says.
The home secretary says the Canadian scheme for 20,000 is just an "aspiration" and includes locally employed staff.
Priti Patel tells @KayBurley there could be more than 10,000 people brought over under the scheme for translators and other locally employed staff.
The govt have committed to 5,000 this year, but she says it could be far higher if circumstances allow.

"Lord Ahmad has been working closely with the Foreign Secretary and the FCDO team throughout the response to events in Afghanistan, including engaging with international partners."
Lord Ahmad is minister of state for South Asia, has been in post for four years, and has been involved in the peace talks underway in Doha between the Taliban and Afghan government over the past year.
NEW Ministers ignored warning 8 months ago that the US withdrawal would destabilise Afghan government and cannot say that “no one foresaw or predicted the consequences” - by me and @RaynerSkyNews news.sky.com/story/afghanis…
A report presented to the government in January called for an urgent assessment of the risks of withdrawal.
Ministers, it said, had “shown little inclination to exert an independent voice on policy in Afghanistan”
The Conservative chair of the Lords international affairs and defence committee, Baroness Anelay, told @SkyNews she was “very disappointed” that no such assessment was provided when the government responded in March.
Ben Wallace on @SkyNews says the Taliban are allowing people through to a processing centre "contrary to reports".
He says the problem is "they are letting everyone through" to the airport including people w/out permission to fly - leaving soldiers to do "crowd control".
Williamson tells @SkyNews his department held an extensive consultation on the grading system in April with unions etc - and there was consensus on it and "we had every confidence that what had been developed by Ofqual would withstand scrutiny".
When did he become aware of the problems with the algorithm? Given @CommonsEd report in July and reporting of 40% downgrades over a month ago...
GW says "at every stage the DfE and Ofqual put the issue of children from disadvantaged backgrounds at the heart of what it does"
1/ What can Government do to “turbocharge” preparations given the documents say public and business readiness for low deal will remain at a low level due to uncertainty about what they’re preparing for:
2/ Government say an updated version will be produced in coming days. Will it do much to mitigate fact that medicines have too short a shelf life to be stockpiled, the docs say:
