By now it is well known that behind that very public false accusation against my husband there was a deeper story behind it.
This article gives me goosebumps. Here’s why 🧵
“But hire me they did.
In fact, the members of the search committee practically begged me to come be their pastor.”
Fact: Votes in favor can even be unanimous. It all means the racists don’t want to be singled out. Enthusiasm is deceiving.
“But one day an older member, Emily, came into my office to ask me about my views on a few topics. “
Fact: There’s always an Emily. In fact, many start appearing. Some leave quietly, some persist and antagonize. The drip-drip starts the flood.
“Your sermons about justice make us feel bad about ourselves, we want sermons that make us feel good.”
Fact: They make it seem as if the pastor mentioned them by name. That’s because they recognize their collective responsibility, and their own reflection is unwelcomed.
“Secret meetings to strategize how to get rid of me.”
Fact: “Executive committees” allowed to vote out a pastor by misrepresenting *the whole* of the congregation is a common tactic. Remember, this is a church! 😮
“I had told the church that if they were that unhappy with how I led, they could find a new pastor. They chose to harass me to the point of a mental breakdown instead.”
Harrassment is a common tool when they have no true reason to oust the pastor. They don’t wanna look bad…
…so they try to make the pastor sound “obsessed” with talking about the injustice they indeed have inflicted.
In our case, when the NDA didn’t work.

“When I objected to lying and being forced to hide the trauma I had been subjected to, they asked me, “Why do you feel the need to get revenge?”
Fact: This has been casually, informally, & semi-formally thrown at my husband for the mere “daring” to push for justice…
… or just posting about racism “too often”, and posting photos/stories of his —by the grace of God— succesful mission development work where an actual congregation of humans is evident
“What followed was forty-five minutes of elder after elder threatening to stop giving money, threatening to leave, and telling me how I was killing the church. “
Fact: In our case this happened backstage, in secrecy. It was deliberately crafted into an NDA.
“There were a few brave souls who defended me.”
Fact: They are drowned in the ocean of hate, be it by fear, or embarrassment because these are their fellow church people. A few are offered consolation prizes, such as positions of power for their silence.
