An incredible statement from Portland police, their sidelining themselves.

“You should not expect to see police officers standing in the middle of the crowd trying to keep people apart. People should keep themselves apart and avoid physical confrontation."
This was last years event. Police didn’t separate crowds, it sounds like their taking the same approach this year.
Portland has a long history of political street fights.

In years past police have generally had the most success containing violence when they separate groups

On Aug 17, 2019 when proud boys came to town police made an effort to keep groups separate
Last year after the aug 22 event, the chief was asked if Portland police were allowing mutual combat.

The police chief said no.

That weekend police didn’t separate groups, leading to an counter which resulted in a man being shot and killed in downtown Portland.
