Things like the OnlyFans porn ban don't happen in a vacuum, they're outcomes of a trend of new-Puritanism that's been growing in our culture over the last decade, on both the right and the left. See for example: video games. (thread)
The days of Lara Croft's giant chest triangles and Supergirl flying around in a bare midriff and miniskirt are basically gone. Female characters like that just don't get made anymore (outside Japan) because they'll be labeled "objectified" and "sexist" based on male gaze theory.
Likewise, the promotional models of days past have disappeared. No more booth babes at E3, no more grid girls for Formula 1, no more Carl's Jr. ads where you forget they're selling burgers, even Victoria's Secret ditched the angel image. And feminists have largely celebrated.
And God forbid any company should retain the services of such women for industry events. Microsoft had to apologize for this:
Having sexy models or dancers anywhere near the professional sphere is perceived as tantamount to sexually harassing one's female employees, as though they're being subconsciously told that role is all they're good for.
Our whole culture has marinaded in that kind of rhetoric for years, largely pushed by a certain subsection of feminism, who seem to believe all men suffer from the Madonna/Whore complex and must be prevented from sexualizing women so they can respect and humanize them.
And then when groups like Morality in Media rebrand as NCOSE or Exodus Cry and pretend that instead of being bible-thumping cultural authoritarians they're actually trying to protect women from exploitation, it works. Cuz it's a logical outgrowth of what we're told is feminist.
If sex-positivity vs sex-negativity were seen a party line left vs right issue...well companies like Visa and Mastercard, who have to deal with everyone, red states and blue, they don't want to be seen as partisan actors and thus draw the regulatory ire of the opposing party.
So if this kind of anti-porn activism were denied the ability to hide behind a feminist mask and had to present itself as the pure religious traditionalism that it really is...payment processors might punt on the issue because they wouldn't want to be perceived as taking a side.
But when leftist, feminist talking points allow the whole thing to be dressed up in "protecting women"/"fighting trafficking" language, it creates political cover for puritanism...and corporatists who just don't want the baristas and waitresses they need to have a better option.
To avoid such outcomes, the left must re-embrace a sex-positive culture and move away from misapplied 70s' film crit theories that meangirl on women, real or fictional, because they might turn men on too much. So the next time you boot up a playstation and see a girl like this:
Don't get on twitter or write a review complaining about how it's gross or objectifying or unrealistic, or any other thinly-veiled way to say "ewww, she's dressed like a whore!", and then be surprised when actual whores are vilified and chased off platforms. (end thread)
