NEW: The media regulator @Ofcom has told me that it has left the controversial @stonewalluk Diversity Champions scheme - in part it says, because of the need to remain impartial in regard to some of the most heated debates surrounding Stonewall’s political campaigns.
In a statement @Ofcom said: "As the communications regulator, an important part of our responsibility is to ensure we remain impartial and independent at all times. Our commitment to supporting the rights and freedoms of LGBTQ+ people is as strong as ever."
I understand that the decision was made because Ofcom's relationship with Stonewall may have led to perceptions of bias, following increased scrutiny of some of Stonewall’s policy positions.
@Ofcom also came under pressure after comments made by its Chief Executive Dame Melanie Dawes at a DCMS Select Committee appeared to suggest that broadcasters should not engage with a new Gay rights charity @ALLIANCELGB Ofcom says Dawes’s comments were misconstrued.
