Trudeau speaks without a teleprompter. He talks about supporters who came to event tonight who wanted to see him, and how event had to be cancelled in case some of them would get hurt. To the protesters: “I know and I feel the anger, the frustration, perhaps the fear.”
.@jpress asks Trudeau to reflect as to whether he played any role in inflaming tensions by telling protesters repeatedly to go get vaccinated. He says we all need to reflect. Science tells us the way out of this.
I asked Trudeau what was different about tonight compared to 2019, when there was a security threat (also in Brampton) and he put on a vest, went out and addressed the rally. “What’s different about tonight is we could not guarantee the safety of the people in attendance.”
To @kkirkup he said “I’ve never seen this intensity of anger” before.

Protesters at Trudeau’s event in Newmarket, outnumbered by supporters. There’s a PPC sign, another that says VAX = DEATH. One woman screamed at us from the moment we got off the bus, following us to event. She’s still screaming. Among other things she’s upset about masks outside.
I recognize the woman with the white sign from I believe both the Nobleton & (cancelled) Bolton rallies last Friday.
At one point a protester yells “take off your hijab” - unclear who he’s yelling at. Group of supporters boos loudly.

Trudeau pays visit to Toronto riding of Davenport. Held by Liberals, has been a tight race with NDP last two elections. Event is in a parking lot down a narrow laneway, not easy to spot from street. Events so far today have been less public than my other week w/this campaign.
Incumbent @JulieDzerowicz gives long intro speech about all the things she’s proud of w/this govt & what she’s accomplished in riding. Opens by talking about being proud of feminist govt. By tone, unclear whether that’s meant to somehow touch on Saini allegations, or oblivious.
Trudeau references O’Toole’s flip flop today - “the important thing is he has tried to mislead Canadians, he has tried to deceive them”…one thing you need to know about O’Toole, Trudeau says, is he tells special interest groups one thing and others another.

Liberals highlighting new commitments on guns & use opportunity to continue criticizing O’Toole’s after yesterday- @BillBlair accuses him of “doubling down on the same lie.” Libs promise to make buybacks on banned firearms mandatory, $1B for provinces implementing handgun ban.
The Liberal promise on banned firearms is to use the buyback or have the firearm rendered permanently inoperable.
Trudeau suggests in an answer the $1B number could end up being more if more provinces decide they want to get on board.

Cute comment OH as Trudeau meets tables at a street food event in Richmond Hill, ON. An incredulous onlooker- “It’s like a 6 hour drive, how far did he travel from Ottawa!!”
A pair of Iranian women here want to talk to PM about more help for women in Afghanistan. So far got to speak to local MP @MajidJowhari. Unimpressed by him on Iranian relations. He was pretty brusque, handed them card & said “you haven’t given me a chance,” left to catch up w/PM.
This man is very upset. Yells at Trudeau his family was killed by Iran and Trudeau promised to help but has failed. Hard to hear but Trudeau seems to de escalate, conversation ends with some polite applause.

BREAKING: NACI recommends the AstraZeneca vaccine now be offered to people 30+, if the individual does not want to wait for an mRNA vaccine and the benefit outweighs the risk. NACI still considers mRNA vaccines as “preferentially recommended.”
MORE: NACI says mRNA vaccines are still “preferentially” recommended “due to the excellent protection they provide, the absence of a safety signal of concern and the acceptilbity of the vaccines by people in Canada.”
More on AZ guidance from NACI written recommendations -says 30+ should only be given AZ if they don’t want to wait for mRNA PLUS 3 other points: benefit outweighs risk, relative risks of blood clots & COVID are outlined, and “there will be a substantial delay” for mRNA.

A federal modelling update is back and so is that pesky daylight across Dr. Tam’s face. She says we’re still in a tight race between the vaccine and the variant and there have been more than 200k new cases since the last update a month ago.
The average of people in hospitals and ICUs each day has doubled or more since late March. Over the past week there has been an average of 46 deaths daily. Dr. Tam says deaths rates are still well below peaks of first and second wave.
Dr. Tam says the good news from today’s update is about the Rt (rate of transmission). It’s below 1 for the first time in weeks, following restrictions. This means “epidemic has dropped out of a growth pattern,” which she attributes to BC, ON & QC. It’s above 1 in other places.
