WaPo says Blinken convinced Ghani to step down in "U.S.-brokered arrangement with the Taliban" with Taliban agreeing to stay out of Kabul & with goal being to "buy time for negotiations aimed at forming an inclusive government that involved the Taliban."
(Blinken talked about that call with Ashraf Ghani in an interview last weekend, wherein he referred to Ghani as Karzai, who hasn't been president of Afghanistan since 2014)
"A local man serving in Afghanistan died Thursday... A notice fwd'ed to the Sandusky Register from the school district states: 'Max Soviak, a 2017 Edison grad, was killed in Afghanistan from the attack at the Kabul airport.' Soviak was a U.S. Navy medic." sanduskyregister.com/news/339579/lo…

"The City of Rio Bravo is mourning the loss of a local hero. A Laredo Marine is one of the 13 U.S Service members killed in the attack at the Kabul Airport in Afghanistan. One of the victims in the attack was U.S. Marine David Lee Espinoza, 20." kgns.tv/2021/08/27/rio…
if you care about the bowls, the only two options are not to keep the door closed forever or swing it open & let them crash - you could remove a pane of glass, for instance, and pull the bowls out carefully that way. a great example of a difficult (but def not impossible!) task.
don't give up Bagram. don't get blindsided by Taliban. remove Americans & embassy workers & Afghan allies before Kabul falls, not after, & keep U.S. troops there til it's done. bomb Taliban if it moves on Kabul. or just open the door & let the bowls crash.
imagine thinking "don't get blindsided by the Taliban" is too much to ask of the most advanced & most expensive military & intelligence apparatus in the world.
Blinken to Wallace: "We’re in direct contact with Americans and others to help guide them to the airport, right place, right time, to get in more safely and effectively."
Blinken to Wallace about Biden's lie that al-Qaeda is "gone" from Afghanistan: "Are there al-Qaeda members & remnants in Afghanistan? Yes. But what the President was referring to was its capacity to do what it did on 9/11. And that capacity has been very successfully diminished."
Wallace: "Mr. Secretary, does the President not know what’s going on?"
Blinken: "This is an incredibly emotional time for many of us, & including allies & partners who have been shoulder-to-shoulder with us in Afghanistan for 20 yrs at high cost to themselves as well as to us."
