I think you’ll see 250 variations of this over the next week, but I’d like to share my perspective as a local(-ish).
*ahem*
TIPS FOR OUT-OF-TOWNERS ATTENDING #AEWAllOut RELATED STUFF: A THREAD
1/12
1. WEATHER
It will be hot and humid all week with the potential for intermittent PM severe thunderstorms (Midwest stuff). A rain poncho or sturdy umbrella will serve you well.
If you drive into heavy rain while on the highway, SLOW DOWN & PUT YOUR HAZARDS ON. BE SAFE.
2/12
2. TRANSPORTATION FOR CAR PEOPLE
If you’re not road tripping up or if you don’t already have a rental car secured, try a subscription service like Zipcar or carpool with friends. Otherwise, you may be SOL.
If you need a ride from someone, at least OFFER gas money.
3/12
3. TRANSPORTATION FOR NON-CAR PEOPLE
Public transit in the suburbs is not reliable. Some Pace buses don’t run on weekends. And the suburbs & city use different private transit companies (Pace =/= CTA except in certain cases).
Uber/Lyft are doable but WILL BE EXPENSIVE.
4/12
4. TRANSPORTATION APPS FOR EVERYONE
1) Google Maps. This will be your best friend. 2) Ventra. If you’re going to downtown Chicago & using public transit, this app is your wingman.
If you wanna “well, actually” my apps, that’s your business. You can write your own guide.
5/12
5. YES, WE’RE STILL IN A PANDEMIC
Illinois has a mandatory indoor mask policy in place. Keep a mask with you at all times.
Vaccine cards aren’t being requested, but it’s a good idea to take pictures of yours, front & back, and save them to your phone
for easy access.
6/12
6. THE LAY OF THE LAND
The NOW Arena is in Hoffman Estates. Fan Fest is in Schaumburg. These two towns are next to each other — convenient!
You know what isn’t next to them?
CHICAGO.
Plan your days accordingly.

7. DOWNTOWN CHICAGO - DRIVING & PARKING
Parking is private (expensive). Unless you have an app like SpotHero and enjoy having elevated blood pressure, I recommend not driving into downtown Chicago, especially on a weekend. Especially on LABOR DAY WEEKEND. Trust me on this.
8/12
8. DOWNTOWN CHICAGO - TRAINS
We have 2 kinds.
METRA - commuter trains to & from the suburbs
CTA - ‘L’ (semi-subway) trains (and buses)
The Ventra app has started to bridge the gap between the two, but it’s far from perfect. Research carefully before you go downtown.
9/12
9. DOWNTOWN CHICAGO - BUSES
I have a strong bias for the bus. It gets me almost everywhere I need to go within city limits, and it’s usually reliable when I need it. But if you’re a first-timer, please research your routes carefully first.
10/12
10. DOWNTOWN CHICAGO - TAXIS
They’re starting to come back, they’re cheaper than Uber/Lyft, AND they usually know where the hell they’re going! Your best bet is to give them a cross-street or a major landmark instead of an address. It’s also good to, again, RESEARCH.
11/12
11. ANYTHING ELSE?
Be considerate. Look like you know where you’re going. If it sounds too good to be true, then it probably is. Don’t eat on public transit. Wear deodorant.
I’m not a Chicago encyclopedia, but I know some other things too. Lmk your questions.
Thanks! 👋
