A THREAD on my feelings after that win over Watford, heading into the international break, and the final two days of the transfer window...
Let's start by saying we are top of the Premier League and Arsenal are 20th. Funny. Means nothing at this point in the season but still very much enjoyable.
Spurs may not have blown anyone away in the opening three games, three 1-0 wins, three clean sheets, nine points, these are not things to turn your nose up at. There are still so many improvements to be made but the baseline performances have been unexpectedly good.
Let's remember, these three wins have come in the midst of Harry Kane's transfer drama and without any of our new signings really playing a part in proceedings. Plus, there could be more signings to come. So yeah, a great start for Tottenham but also lots of room for growth.
Perhaps the most surprising standout so far has been the defence. The back four hasn't changed, apart from Tanganga coming in for Aurier. No new players, yet they look so strong at the moment and haven't conceded a single PL goal in three games.
Sanchez, in particular, today was solid at the back, both with his no-nonsense defending and his confidence with the ball at his feet. Some of those cross-field balls were Toby-esque. Dier, on the other hand, was and has been so dominant in the air. A partnership in the making?
In all honesty, I feel like I have seen this one before. I expect Romero to play Conference League and cup football to get fit and then he will replace Sanchez when he makes a glaring error. I would love for him to prove me wrong, but it always seems to happen.
Tanganga I would say provides a solid base but plays too much on the back foot for a right-back. That will, of course, improve and the timing of his runs today was class. Reguilon on the other side is the opposite, he needs to tighten up his defending to go with his forward play.
Hojbjerg seems to have copied and pasted himself on the pitch to create Oliver Skipp. They somehow mirror and compliment each other all at the same time. Skipp is still lacking in some positional awareness, but that will come with experience. As a duo, they are a great base.
With those two keeping things ticking over and Dele working hard on his pressing game and blocking off passing lanes, we have a very effective three. I do worry that we miss a midfielder capable of consistently unlocking the door though, like Christian Eriksen under Poch.
The game today was one of fine margins with Watford defending deep behind the ball. Those games will come around often for Spurs and we need to figure out how to break teams down on a consistent basis, hopefully scoring more than one goal per game in the process.
Will that midfielder come before the deadline? Probably not, but Spurs have great players in Dele, Lo Celso, Kane, and Ndombele. They just need to find a good system to make the most out of that creativity against the smaller teams, maybe sacrificing a Hojbjerg or Skipp.
Up front, Son is becoming less and less a sidekick, more and more a match-winner in his own right. He used to add the icing on the cake, now he has the ability to bake it himself, which is extremely helpful for Spurs. Having him AND Kane again this season is a real blessing.
I also think that Bergwijn will start chipping in with goals and assists this year, while the likes of Moura, Lo Celso, Gil and more really offer Spurs more rotation, strength, depth, and power off the bench. It's all looking rather good... for the moment at least.
With just a couple of days left in the transfer window, I still think Spurs need a new striker, an attacking midfielder, and a defender (if not two). We have to be realistic in what Paratici and Levy can pull off in 48 hours but I think we will see more signings.
I would be disappointed if there wasn't another defensive-minded player and another attack-minded player coming in before the window closes. Traore? Tomiyasu? No idea, but I think there will be additional signings in some shape or form.
The international break, I think, comes at the perfect time for Spurs. We can now hit pause on that positive start and sit at the top of the table while our players get up to full fitness, sharpness, and the window can actually close.
Kane can go away with England and use that as a kind of training camp to get his sharpness back, while Nuno will finally know his full squad of settled players for the season, which will do wonders for him.
For the weeks ahead, I want to see consistency from Dier/Sanchez, a goal or two from Bergwijn, improved fitness for Kane, and some different systems beyond that standard 4-3-3 that people may figure out eventually.
All in all, it feels as if the players/staff have fought for a base from which to build this season, rather than playing catch up from week one onwards. There is promise, potential and plenty to smile about around Tottenham at the moment. Long may it continue. #COYS

#NotoGattuso A THREAD:
We have been taken on a managerial merry-go-round this summer - except no one asked to get on, we are all feeling sick and Daniel Levy is still pushing.
It feels as if we have gone through a who's who catalogue of big names in the world of football, only to land at the feet of Paulo Fonseca. An underwhelming appointment, but one many of us were warming to the more we researched him.
