I am not conversant in the details of RFK's assassination to the degree necessary to comment on what happened in the pantry on June 4, 1968. But I do know a lot of the reporters involved. Rather than offer my opinion, I will add two facts. A #SirhanSirhan thread
I know David Talbot as a good friend, a prodigious reporter on the subject. I trust him implicitly. Lisa Pease is also a friend, sharp in her commentary, but it was good research, not harsh words, is what got her findings about Dag Hammerskold’s death before the UN. #SirhanSirhan
Dan Moldea, my go-to guy on organized crime stories, is immersed in RFK story. He also hosts a bibulous annual banquet for impecunious Washington writers. As for Shane O'Sullivan, I have met him a couple of times and corresponded with him occasionally. #SirhanSirhan
I learned a lot from O'Sullivan's fine book "Dirty Tricks," while writing my forthcoming book on the CIA and Watergate. (Self-promotion timeout: My book is called "Scorpions' Dance.’ You can pre-order here: us.macmillan.com/books/97812508… ) #SirhanSirhan
I should say that when O'Sullivan made a mistake on the Ambassador Hotel story, he admitted it and moved on. That's what good reporters do. (And good reporters make mistakes.)
Let me add two facts about RFK that may be relevant to the ongoing discussion. #SirhanSirhan
RFK Fact # 1) In October 1975, retired CIA counterintelligence chief James Angleton told a congressional investigator that he thought RFK's death was an organized crime hit. Angleton was a both a genius and an alcoholic (as I wrote in my 2017 biography The Ghost. #SirhanSirhan
so his testimony has to be handled with care. (BTW You can impulse buy The Ghost here: amazon.com/Ghost-Secret-S…). But you can't say Angleton didn't know what he was doing when it came to intelligence collection re #SirhanSirhan, which leads me to RFK Fact #2
After Angleton was forced to resign in December 1974, panicky CIA officials swept his offices looking for files damaging to the Agency. George Kalaris, the veteran officer who succeeded Angleton as counterintelligence chief, wrote a memo for the record..... #SirhanSirhan
Make of this macabre fact what you will. What is known is that Kalaris ordered the RFK autopsy photos destroyed. To me, the Kalaris memo (uncovered the Assassination Records Review Board) is ipso facto proof of one thing.... #SirhanSirhan
The CIA's counterintelligence chief was interested in the causes of RFK's death. That might indicate that Angleton questioned, at least privately, the official story blaming #SirhanSirhan alone. In any case, I say without fear of contradiction....
James Angleton collected intelligence on RFK's assassination for reasons unknown. What this means for the RFK conspiracy debate and #SirhanSirhan is up for you to decide. I have an opinion but I'd rather not to share it until I'm better informed. Rest assured, my two RFK facts...
are entirely factual. The documentation for this thread can be found at MaryFerrell.org and JFKFacts.com. For more information about Angleton, read my bio as thriller. And...
amazon.com/Ghost-Secret-S… #SirhanSirhan
And found photographs from RFK's autopsy. Angleton, the definition of a spooky character obtained filmed evidence of the RFK's wounds. To me this is ipso facto proof that Angelton was interested in the cause of RFK's death.
And if you like what you're reading about #SirhanSirhan, pre-order Scorpion's Dance, an unknown story about the CIA and Watergate, forthcoming from @StMartinsPress us.macmillan.com/books/97812508…
