Kinship structures (familial relationships) in indigenous societies are not anthropocentric. They involve non-humans & so called non-living entities as well. This is the world view of "man as nature" & not "man against nature" 1/5
When we as Indians treat our rivers as mothers (Ma Ganga, Ma Yamuna, Maa Rewa), or feed our ancestors through crows, or show reverence towards the peepal tree, we refresh these kinship structures with nature, reinforcing that we ARE nature & not apart from it 2/5
If our own ontology was the basis of our engagement with what we call "development" or "modernity", our entire economic model would have been different. It would be organic. Treatment of rivers would be different, flora/fauna would not be "resource", farming not extractive 3/5
It is possible that we would have shifted to renewables like solar much faster, focused on EV tech, because divinity of rivers n forests wouldn't allow us to exploit them, & would force us to think of new ways of addressing our energy needs. Our education system 4/5
would evolve to respect these kinship bonds, & eco-sensitivity would be more than a fashion statement. Singing to make it rain does not show irrationality. It shows the belief that when one part of nature is thirsty, it can simply ask the other for water, & do so in Raaga 5/5

Indigenous knowledge, repackaged as an exotic anthropological offerring, gains the "value addition" which all other raw materials of the south receive in the factories of the north. The global intellectual & material supply chains are identical in this regard & mimick each other.
This means that "veganism", "mindfulness", "coherent breathing" are "finished products", because the "intellectual raw material" has now been processed for the global palate. This product can now be taken off the shelf & readily consumed without risk of cultural contamination.
During this process of repackaging, indigenous knowledge/culture not only loses its true character, but also, indigenous people loose control of their own creation - they are alienated from their own culture. "cultural appropration" can at best be a euphemism for this process.

European modernity was always exported to the colonized world as a form of oppression. It uprooted native ways of life, broke natural relationships & replaced them with new ones. It annihilated native views of reality & rationality. "Itihaas" for example, became "mythology" 1/5
It doesnt mean that its ideas arent worthwhile. But its ontological position is that of a colonizer. Any analysis, or politics, which espouses european progressivism needs to be self aware about the hierarchical nature of its vocabulary & vision. For eg. "individual rights" 2/5
The centrality of the individual person in european modern thought is violent for native societies to the extent that the organic, communal aspect of native traditions gets vilified in it as a form "illegality" against which the rights of the individual ought to be preserved. 3/5
