Fantastic women’s group Q&A at @Positively_UK tonight with lots of really important questions - so good that I’ll answer again here 1/x
Can I pass HIV on if I have a blip? If you have a one-off viral load <200 & are taking your HIV meds then you still won’t pass HIV on during sex. The cut off in #UequalsU studies was <200. But your clinic will want to check your viral load again to make sure it’s not going up 2/x
How do I know if there’s something wrong with my vagina? Watch out for change in discharge (colour, smell, thickness), itching, pain, or unusual bleeding. Any symptoms then call your local sexual health clinic - they’re still open and seeing patients 3/x
How do I clean my vagina? You don’t! Your vagina is designed to self-clean very well. It’s clean and needs to help. In fact sticking stuff like water, soap, dettol, bath foam etc can cause an imbalance and lead to smelly discharge 4/x
Does everyone get menopausal symptoms? No! About 75% of women do, the rest don’t. And even those that do might have very mild symptoms - it’s different for each of us 5/x
How long do menopausal symptoms last for? Usually they start a few years before our last period and carry on for a few years after (average 7-8 years in total). But for some women it can be longer, or even life-long 6/x
What can we do to help ourselves during menopause? Learn about it, exercise (esp weight bearing), reduce alcohol, don’t smoke, stay active if you can. And HRT is an option for most women (and is safe and works). 7/x
Can I get pregnant if I’m going through menopause? Yes! You need to use contraception for 1y after your last ever period (2y if under 50). I speak from personal experience here as someone who conceived (unplanned but a happy accident) at 43 🤦🏽♀️8/8
