THREAD: A few big name streamers tried to throw doubt on the #ADayOffTwitch movement's impact.
As somebody who works in PR, allow me to breakdown why the past three days have probably caused internal ructions at our favourite streaming platform...
1. A quick coverage pull shows that in the last 30 days, the #ADayOffTwitch movement has garnered just shy of 950 pieces of news coverage globally - granted a lot of these are likely syndications, that's a LOT of noise for what people considered a "pointless movement"
2. Now, if I was working in Twitch's PR department, and I saw that many articles from top tier gaming press (Kotaku, Polygon, PinkNews, etc)...I would be hitting the panic button. Not just because of the volume, but because of what might come next...
3. Some of the biggest scandals in gaming have been broken by diligent gaming journalists (e.g Blizzard/Activision).
Because of this one hashtag, more journalists are aware of this issue and will likely begin hunting for new angles and ways to broaden the story...meaning more Qs
4. The last thing Twitch will want now is to be inundated with questions from journalists on what the platform is doing to solve the issues of hate-raids and doxxing, and more importantly, when can users see action.
5. And the thing is, Twitch probably is working on a solution, but they'll want to control the timing of when this is announced to avoid more backlash.
Throw in the DrLupo and TimTheTatMan news on top, and it's just not a good look for them right now.
6. So, despite "big streamers" claiming a day off would do nothing, the movements made in the last two days both with Twitch and the media have shown that these big streamers don't know as much as they think they do.
Here's hoping Twitch do more than just align their PR...
7. Sorry I was meant to finish this earlier.
My point is that impact is measured in more ways than one. We've already seen there was a sizeable dip in viewership on Twitch yesterday, but look at other areas this movements has made waves.
8. Right now, Twitch is now being positioned as being on the back foot. Their lack of response yesterday also doesn't help their positioning.
With two of their biggest streamers switching sides in the same week, there is a now a narrative for competitors (like YT) to play on
And now you can all see how terrible I am at grammar when it comes to social media 🙃🙃
