I have had a few days to reflect & I have been through the anger, the grief & now have come to acceptance. There is no doubt that we, Victorians are in a race to vaccinate our state to freedoms that will make life better and more bearable. A 🧵, 1/

There is no time now to lay blame, denigrate or become nostalgic about what might have been. There is now a clear call for action, a race to vaccinate. I am inspired by the writing of @DrJ_Thompson. A clarion call in dark times to the work that Victorians did last year to save 2/

the state and the country. A feat rarely seen in other Western countries. Victorians should be proud of the lives & livelihoods saved through those 112 days to bring us back to a semblance of normality. Thank you. 3/

We must now accept that we might never be free of this virus again & I know how difficult that is. We didn’t do 5 LDs to be here now. Ideology does not beat this virus, only movement restrictions & a Vaccine Plus strategy. Thank you @CrabbBrendan. 4/

I know personally what that means for me. I am an Emergency Physician & Intensive Care Specialist. I know the next few months are gng to be the hardest months of my life. My team of specialists, nurses, allied health professionals & ward staff will need to work immensely hard 5/

to give every Victorian the best care & chance at pulling through their most difficult days. We will need to be resilient, innovative, compassionate and most importantly; human. 6/

There is now a gd chance as case numbers increase that our hospitals will be burdened further. I hope never to meet you as the day I do will be one of your worst days with illness or grief. My team & I will do everything we can to help you through this 7/

and give you your best chance to get through this disease. But we are stymied by simple math. We might not have enough beds/space/nurses/time to give you the care that you need if everyone does not play their part in these crucial times. 8/

I have 3 kids below the age of 7. I worry about what happens to them if I get sick or when I know for a certainty that they will get sick as we open up. They do not have a chance to be vaccinated & will have their best chance not be infected if everyone > 12+ does their part. 10/

Everything our State govt & @VictorianCHO have done so far is to ensure that I will hopefully never need to get to a position where I need to ration healthcare to you or your loved ones. 11/

I hope never to see you and I have seen how strong and resilient Victorians are. We were the gold standard in how to crush a COVID wave. I hope that we can prove how equitable & generous we are as a society once again; if we stay the course; if we can follow the rules 4 a few 12/
