I still have hope we are not broken.
Solidarity to my medical and nursing brothers and sisters doing the heavy lifting here. Poignant message below from a doc who wishes to remain anonymous:

We wanted to help people
We were smart and driven
We loved science and physiology,
2/9
We loved humans and disease
So we made a commitment
We signed up
It was an honor
We read thousands of pages
Attended hundreds of lectures
Pulled all-nighters
Took more exams than we thought possible
Finals week felt insurmountable
But it didn’t break us
It made us stronger
3/9
We learned statistics and biochemistry
Immunology and pathophysiology
We mastered genetics, virology and pharmacology
We read scientific papers and learned how to dissect them
Scientific papers, not YouTube videos
It was an honor
We came running when you needed us
4/9
Literally, running down the hallway
To the ED, ICU, trauma bay, labor and delivery
"I need help," you said
We can help, we said
It was an honor
There were moments that we thought would break us
Moments that drove us to journaling, to therapy, to nightmares
Broken babies.
5/9
Paralyzed children.
Dead pregnant mothers with three kids at home.
The wail of a mother whose child just died.
We bent but we did not break
We returned because you needed us
And we could help
It was an honor
Then there was fear
Fear of walking into our place of work
6/9
Fear that we’d be killed by going to work
Fear that we’d kill a loved one because of our work
There were tears and sleepless nights and anti-anxiety medications
But you banged your pots and pans
You sent us pizzas and called us heroes
You needed us
We could help
7/9
So we wore our fitted masks, and our plastic gowns, our gloves, and our goggles
We decontaminated ourselves before going home and isolated ourselves from our families
We almost broke
It was an honor

But now.....how quickly our joy has turned to despair
Elation to rage
8/9
You’ve learned to do your own research now
You know better than we do
Gaslighting is your language
Your selfishness is astounding
You don’t want our help when we ask you to stay healthy
Yet you arrive at our doors begging for help at the end
You cram our hospitals.
9/9
You devour our resources. You cripple our ability to help those who did what was asked of them; those who cared for others, not just themselves.
You kill our patients by filling beds and using up our ventilators
We can’t help any more
You broke us
We feel no more honor here.

2/ I cooked one chopped red onion, 3 potatoes, and 8 ears of 🌽 kernels and 4 cloves of garlic in olive oil for about 10 minutes. I left out the 2 capsicums and 2 celeries the recipe asked for because I am picky and I hate capsicum and celery.
3/ I then added 4 cups of stock, 2 cups of water, 1/4t hot chilli powder and 1/4t chipotle (recipe wanted a poblano pepper but I couldn’t find). Added a bay leaf (fresh but apparently they have no flavour until you dry them- my bad) and a bit more salt and pepper. Simmer 25 min.

Hey @GladysB: Doherty modelling re: opening up with 70-80% fully vaxed is predicated on low case numbers.

Will not work as planned with daily cases in the 100’s. Can’t vax our way out of this without getting cases down unless we are happy for ++ deaths & kids with long covid.
Nobody buys the “we didn’t realize delta was so different.” You knew. See India travel ban. So sick of the spin.

Your stated reason for not locking down early was to “not inconvenience” Sydneysiders. How’s that working out?
Gladys, you spent so much energy demonising Victoria last year, it was impossible to learn from Vic’s painful experience.

Shame. This is not leadership. This is short-sighted lack of vision. Lack of perspective. You gambled and we all lost.

There are actually adult humans comparing being told to stay home, watch tv, and collect job keeper payments during a pandemic to being imprisoned, starved, tortured, and gassed in a Nazi concentration camp. Please. Just stop.
1/
Restricting public movement during a pandemic is a temporary measure to protect you, not a human rights violation. It is difficult, costly, and lonely, yes. But people saying these things have clearly never endured actual human rights violations. 2/
If you are really concerned with human rights, contact your local MP and ask why Priya, Nados, and their two little girls have been two yrs imprisoned on Christmas Island instead of working in their Biloela community where they belong. Have you complained about that? 3/

The dreaded call came at 6 am yesterday. Health Dept contact tracers. 1/
“We have determined that you are a close contact of someone who has tested positive for Covid-19. You need to isolate for 14 days from the day you were exposed. You need to get tested on day 11. We will call you every day to see if you have developed symptoms.” 2/
It was a patient who came to see me for a minor office procedure. A few hours later she developed a fever and turned out to be part of a family cluster.

Luckily I hadn’t gone anywhere over the weekend, so won’t have exposed anyone outside potentially my family. I feel fine. 3/
