Travel within the African continent is more expensive when you compare with travel within Europe.

Here’s a list of possible reasons. You can add yours:
Budget airlines make the difference when you speak of travel within Europe, the US, etc, compare flying with Ryanair vs Lufthansa.

We need more (REAL) budget airlines that are not just centred in SA and East Africa but across the whole continent.
-From the business standpoint, airlines need certain number of passengers to break even, not enough passengers, prices double, high taxes by government-price doubles.
- We do not have AU supported initiatives to promote travel within the continent like the EUrail pass for example, or even say travel discounts from airlines (how many countries even have their own national airline sef).
-Airport capacity: logically speaking, smaller airports tend to have fewer airlines, less competition--higher prices
