I think one could make the case China is today a threat to the US while Russia is not because the US never won the Cold War in Asia. Lost in Vietnam which is today ruled by a communist party
Also the destruction of Vietnam removed a limit on Chinese power and made China’s rise easier from 1975 to 2000. So Vietnam defeat is a large part of the reason US is today under pressure from China
Something Mao understood well: that America’s defeat in Vietnam was critical to China’s rise over 50 years. Vietnamese political and economic weakness out of the war was a bonus
Did Vietnam have consequences? Of course and they are everywhere present today. You just have to place it within the confrontation with China rather than the Soviet Union
Had the US won in Vietnam, a US-dominated Southeast Asia (rather than China) could have emerged as the centre of Asia’s economy. As it happened I think by 75 all the conditions for China’s economic miracle were in place

I think this is correct. Biden’s speech went much farther it looks at first. He argued for a radical curtailment of US power politi.co/3Dy1s4E
The crucial element — one that will have been noted in Beijing — and potentially a major strategic blunder is that Biden did not just criticize the use of military power in Afghanistan, he promised never to use it in a *case like Afghanistan*
What is a case like Afghanistan? Well, a moment’s analysis will show it is every relevant case of geopolitical tension today

The family killed by the US drone was making preparations to leave for … America
aljazeera.com/news/2021/8/30…
They described human flesh stuck to the walls. Bones fallen into the bushes. Walls stained red with blood. Shattered glass everywhere.
Talking about one of the younger boys, Farzad, a neighbour said: “We only found his legs.”
“We are all Afghan, we know what a car laden with explosives would do if it was struck from the sky,” said Abdol Matin, a neighbour who grew up with the Ahmadi children. Matin does not buy Washington’s claim that they had conducted a precise strike on an enemy target.

So people think the Belt and Road will not prosper in Afghanistan? Well... Most people still think it is about roads and trains. There won’t be many of those. But think for example of a system of digital surveillance. It fits perfectly with both China’s and the Taliban’s plans
Why would China be unhappy about a world where it can create this system for Afghanistan? Until this week it couldn’t
So even if not a lot of lithium is extracted other things will be extracted

I was flying to Kabul when US embassy issued its first alert telling Americans to leave immediately. August 7. I remember clearly because I was monitoring my own security. Got it on the airplane Image
Compare to previous alerts which were the usual be careful, consider leaving, watch your surroundings — language the State Dept uses for many places around the world all the time (including extremely safe places) Image

I used to think the US had a demanding political culture, but I can’t imagine the following happening in any country I know:
The government goes for weeks without any word on how many Americans are in Afghanistan. There are all kinds of wild guesses, no official word
A number of leaks try to blame those Americans for being there. They are told to go to the airport and not to go to the airport ten times each day

Biden keeps saying the US has “overseen” the evacuation of 70,000 people — not that it has evacuated 70,000 people
Since UAE has evacuated well more than 10,000, Qatar close to 10,000, Britain getting there, and so on… To be clarified
Several other countries have evacuated thousands
