Program existed, was working and was more popular than Jesus and democratic leadership basically never mentioned it and have acted embarrassed about it since day one
Biden and many dem governors are still living in May 2021 when everyone thought we were about to “go back to normal,” but reality didn’t bear this out so the plan is just to stick to the ra ra “we’re back” narrative despite all that’s happening with delta.

yeah one thing we should've touched on in the piece is the contemporary stakes at work: erasing radicals from labor history and retconning liberal reformers as the primary drivers of progress serves to reinforce a similar framework on how people perceive how change happens today
This isn't to say radical elements––then or now––are beyond criticism but the left-punching, vote-shaming, respectability politics that makes up a great deal of contemporary liberal conventional wisdom is largely informed by a warped view of how progress was made, historically.
specifically the stripping of political labels in many pop histories is of interest to me. The removal of anarchism from our histories of turn-of-the-century radical unionism; the erasure of communism from histories of the BPP. We are uniquely scared of -isms which I find curious

I mean the thing is Biden does have a history of evoking Beau’s death in a political context, some may be cynical—who knows. The problem is the NYT et al are trying to contrived Gold Star Family drama out of nothing to further punish him for the crime of withdrawing ground forces

The thinness of the story is the issue, it’s basically handful of people complaining whose politics we don’t know and who, in no way, represent a “Gold Star consensus” and it’s presented in such a smarmy way. They’re just out of ways of prolonging the “Afghanistan chaos” story

It’s immigration and xenophobia. For some reason the role of so-called “center right” parties in Europe being worried about immigration flows from Afghanistan drawing voters to further right parties is almost entirely ignored in these “European leaders are mad at Biden” pieces.
Read what they actually say! They speak in soft EU liberalese but Merkel, Macron, Johnson are very upset the Taliban takeover may result in more Muslim immigrants. They often evoke Syrian “wave” of 2014-18 as to why it’s a problem and hide behind the polite language of “security”
Racism and fear of racist backlash is a, if not THE, motivating factor and no matter how many lanyards from the Atlantic Council or Marshall Fund drone on about betrayal or a lack of consultation or high minded liberal values its absolutely because EU leaders dont want immigrants

extremely telling the NYT editorial board employees 13 fully grown adults who never entertain the idea that the US’s nominal motives of promoting civil rights and woman’s empowerment in Afghanistan may not actually be their true motives. Toddlers are less credulous than this.
I mean I know it’s a largely phony posturing because they’re nursing the bruised egos of rich liberal imperialists who they’re trying influence but it’s a pathology at the Times to play the rule of constantly perplexed 5 year old finding out Santa isn’t real.
Here’s this gem from 2017. Bush was simply trying to “nudge autocrats” into supporting democratic values by invading Afghanistan and Iraq
