When I turned 30, I was a mess.

- Ate garbage
- Working an entry level job
- Spent weekends at the bar

And my wife was expecting our first kid.

I knew it was time for a change.
I cut down my drinking before our first kid, but not enough.

Before our first kid turned one, I got drunk, went on a bike ride, crashed and broke my elbow.

This created more work for my wife, as my ability to help was limited.
We had our second kid 18 months later.

He had a heart condition that required heart surgery within a month of being born.

This was a wake-up call.

I realized I needed to become a different person.
I stopped drinking entirely for about the next five years.

These five years were incredibly productive for me.

I more than doubled my salary and started having success helping low-performing teams gain momentum in a short period.
Even while I was drinking, I always was a student of leadership. I read everything I could get my hands on.

The problem was I didn't have the energy to execute because I wasn't taking care of myself.
These last two years, I’ve found myself slipping back into old habits.

- Inconsistent exercise
- Inconsistent diet
- Heavy drinking on weekends

51 days ago I made major changes.
I’m down 22 pounds, and with the energy and focus, I need to tackle massive goals.

The thing is, exercise shouldn't be about weight loss.

It's about taking care of your mind and body so you can make the most of your time on earth.
Every day is a blessing.

Let's make the most of it.

11 Questions to help you decide if you are ready to lead a team:
Do you do what you say you will?

Everything starts with trust

The best way to show your team you are competent and have integrity is by doing what you say you will do.

My advice:

- Write down your commitments
- Proactively manage expectations
Do you know how to resolve conflict?

Hoping conflict will go away by ignoring it is like hoping weeds in your garden will go away when you ignore them.

Your goal is not to hope conflict disappears because it won't. Great leaders understand how to manage if effectively.

Knowing these 5 biases will 5x your decision-making and help you be a better leader:
1. Affinity bias

We have the tendency to like people who are similar to us.

- hobbies,
- background,
- or political views.
Affinity bias example:

An interviewer might favor a candidate who went to their alma mater over a candidate who went to a different university

11 Things You Should Never Say to Anyone (and what to say instead):
1/
❌ Come here!
✅ Can you please come and chat with me for a second?

An invitation to collaborate will always be more impactful than a demand.
2/
❌ You wouldn't understand.
✅ I hope I can explain this.

Focus on the challenges you are facing instead of insulting the intelligence of others.

Vince Lombardi is one of the great coaches in NFL History.

He led The Green Bay Packers to 5 Championships in 7 years. !!

But they were an awful 1-10 the year before he took over.

This is what he did to create a winning culture: Image
Before Lombardi arrived, the Packers had nothing going for them.

- They didn't work hard in practice
- They didn't mind losing
- No winning seasons in 11 years

In his first year with the team they had a winning season and he was named NFL Coach of the Year.
1. He focused on strengths

Before his first season, he obsessed over watching the team play. (He discovered the team was even worse than he imagined.)

But there were glimpses of brilliance, and he focused on how he could replicate these moments.

As a leader, dealing with fire drills is part of your job.

Your goal is not to deal with the same fire drill twice.

Use this system to stop repeat fire drills:
1. Name the Fire

First, on the list, make sure it is clear what happened.

- Misinformation posted on the website
- Email blast sent out to the wrong email list
- The machine broke and stopped production
- Client complained about misinformation
2. Define the Impact

For your team to be bought into the change, they will need to understand the scope of the impact.

- Who is impacted?
- Why did it happen?
- Where does it happen?
- How often does this happen?

What results are you missing out on because of this fire drill?
