I think there could be a full-time Twitter feed just for the phrase "Despite being vaccinated." I realize ESPN nowadays might be the single stupidest news source in the galaxy, but why are these guys or anyone else still surprised at this?
espn.com/college-footba…
Then literally IN THE SAME ARTICLE that mentions that the cases are among vaccinated players and stuff comes this little chestnut, "Georgia is not requiring fans to show proof of vaccination or a negative COVID-19 test to attend games at Sanford Stadium this season."
I ask again--do these guys literally never stop and ask themselves, "Hmmmm...." Look folks--if you have Pfizer, at about the 4-5 month mark you should assume you are effectively unimmune unless you get an antibodies and/or t-cell test and confirm you still have immunity.
If you had J&J any time this spring, given the low original efficacy and the lack of any data to the contrary, you should assume you are essentially unimmune unless you confirm your antibodies level.
It is simply irresponsible for most vaccinated people who are more than 4-5 months post-vaccine to assume they are immune to contracting and spreading Covid. And the media's constant downplaying of "rare" breakthrough infections IS NOT HELPING.
We know the media wants to overplay the benefits of the vaccines and downplay their weaknesses (waning and variants). But giving vaxxed people a false sense of security that they are invincible leads to not monitoring immunity level and not taking appropriate precautions.
This has always been my point--monitoring people's immunity levels, whether vaxxed or NI, is essential. We have millions of people strutting around out there thinking they have immunity because they were vaccinated in February or March.
We need to stop focusing on vaccine status and start focusing on immunity status. We know vaccines provide imperfect protection against infection. They are less effective against Delta. And the protection wanes fast. People need to know that!
it is sad and astonishing how many stories you read about vaccinated people in the hospital who are shocked they got a breakthrough infection. Nobody should be shocked at this point. Accurate information will help people take better care of themselves and those around them.
It reminds me of the big story a few weeks back in the NYT that profiled unvaxxed people who were hospitalized and asked why they were unvaxxed. Several of them said, "Because I was told that if I wore a mask whenever I went out I wouldn't get Covid."
Science, not reassuring propaganda, is the way out of all this. Propaganda just makes matters worse.

According to the Israel study, vax of Covid survivors reduces the odds of infection 0.52x versus NI alone (several studies show no benefit). According to a study in JAMA, the odds of adverse events from 1 shot vax post-recovery is increased 4.59x. jamanetwork.com/journals/jamai…
Or how about this: "Prior COVID-19 infection was associated with an increased risk of any side effect.... It was also associated with an increased risk of severe side effects leading to hospital care (1.56 (1.14-2.12))." ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/P…
"Systemic side-effects were more common (1·6 times after the first dose of ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 and 2·9 times after the first dose of BNT162b2) among individuals with previous SARS-CoV-2 infection than among those without known past infection." ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/P…

So I find this confusion by @smerconish to be very interesting to try to understand. I appeared on his radio and tv show and he is obviously a very smart man who seems to want to understand this.
@smerconish Yet he still seems to think that what prevents us from reaching herd immunity is that there are too many unvaccinated. Despite the science and so many breakthrough infections (35k a week in the US along according to the CDC) he still doesn't understand how these vaccines work.
@smerconish But he also quite clearly does not understand how evolution works. Evolution has three elements: (1) variation (2) selection (3) replication.

How long does natural immunity last? According to the July 17, 2021 CDC/IDSA Clinician Call the answer is "AT LEAST 11 months." Why estimated? At the time of the call, 11 months was the longest followup period in studies--and many with NI were still going. idsociety.org/globalassets/i…
WHO May Briefing, "[I]n most people immune responses remain robust and protective against reinfection for at least 6-8 months after infection (the longest follow up with strong scientific evidence is currently approximately 8 months)." who.int/publications/i…
Note that didn't say that it lasts only 8 months--it says "at least" 6-8 months because NI was still robust at 8 months when the follow up studies were conducted. CDC/IDSA extends it... another 3 months.

usnews.com/news/business/… Whoa, wait, is this even allowed? A politician actually willing to hold accountable vaccinated individuals for their own recklessness in contracting and spreading breakthrough infections instead of blaming everyone else but them?
"Prime Minister Naftali Bennett said Sunday that research is showing a rise in infections among a perhaps unexpected segment of the population: Israelis of middle age who received two shots near the beginning of the year, but not a booster....
"'This is because they are going around with the sense that they are protected,' Bennett told his Cabinet. 'They do not understand that the second dose erodes over time against the delta strain and that they must be inoculated with the third dose quickly.'"

"Results: SARS-CoV-2-naive vaccinees had a 13.06-fold (95% CI, 8.08 to 21.11) increased risk for breakthrough infection with the Delta variant compared to those previously infected.... The increased risk was significant (P<0.001) for symptomatic disease as well."
"SARS-CoV-2-naive vaccinees were also at a greater risk for COVID-19-related-hospitalizations compared to those that were previously infected."
"Conclusions: This study demonstrated that natural immunity confers longer lasting and stronger protection against infection, symptomatic disease and hospitalization caused by the Delta variant of SARS-CoV-2, compared to the BNT162b2 two-dose vaccine-induced immunity."

So it turns out that although vaccinated people have no problem demanding to know everyone else’s vaccine status, they consider it private to disclose whether they have already had their scheduled breakthrough infection and how many people they infected when they did. 🤷🏻‍♂️
And trust me on this – they really don’t like it if you ask them whether they flew on a plane or went to a party while they had their brakes or infection.
It seems to me that maybe they should be required to wear little signs or badges that indicate if they got their vaccine more than say five months ago so that everybody knows to be careful to steer clear?
