SURVEILLANCE TESTING DOES NOT KEEP SCHOOLS OPEN. IT KEEPS THEM CLOSED.
Thank you.
I honestly, and in good faith, do not understand how testing asymptomatic kids keeps schools open. Finding asymptomatic cases requires classrooms to quarantine and keeps healthy kids out of school. I am willing to entertain good faith arguments to convince me otherwise.
Of over 36k students quarantined last year, 192 tested positive. That's one half of one percent. And some of those were false positives or coincidences.
This afternoon, I was contacted by a producer at a network news show asking if I wanted to be interviewed about "the new CDC school and mask guidance." I readily agreed. 🧵
Before we get any further I want to make my point upfront: the media has a story to sell, and the story is not "everything is ok and will continue to be ok." The story that sells is one of fear and panic.
Back to my story: I spoke about how my biggest concern about the upcoming school year was that it would be a 3rd year of disrupted school. That what kids needed was normalcy, and that in our post-vaccine world a return to normalcy was not only possible, but also necessary.
I am a registered Democrat. I have voted in every election (primary & general) since I turned 18. I have never once, not ever, voted for a Republican. I thought after Trump I never would.
Every day I meet someone who thinks that once teachers are vaxd, schools will magically go back to full time. But there is zero effort to tie teacher vax to open schools. A Rep Sen attempted to tie vax to a commitment to open schools. Was it a cynical move? Yes. But also smart.
D success in 2018 and 2020 relied on suburban (white) women who aren't really Democrats, but they didn't like Trump. D success in 2022 (including holding onto a majority in Congress) will depend on these women.
