5) Someone who is feeling suicidal is in a lot of pain already they don't need pity, to be judged or to be blamed, we need to think about these factors when approaching the conversation
6) There's no perfect way to have a conversation about suicide so don't let that stop you asking the question but if you do try to be direct, to empathise with the person's pain & offer hope in that moment
7) There are key ways not to ask someone about suicide: They're not attention seeking, or selfish or cowards & don't need to be blamed or stigmatised, they're in pain and need understanding and empathy
8) By asking the question about suicide we can help a person feel less alone, connected to us, feel understood and have the possibility of hope, we can all be that #onegoodadult
9) When we ask the question about suicide and the answer is yes, thank the person for telling you, don't guarantee confidentiality, what can we do right now to keep you safe & who else can we involve to increase safety
This week has the potential to be very polarising & damaging on the issue of schools so please bear in mind:
🔵 teachers are not the enemy if they’re anxious about going back to work
🔵 parents / kids who are anxious about going back have valid concerns
🔵 children do need to be back in school for educational social & mental health reasons
🔵 needing to be back doesn’t mean it’s covid safe to be back
🔵 kids not going back isn’t easy for parents without childcare
🔵 teachers & school staff will be out because of covid
🔵 principals can’t magic staff out of a magic teacher closet
🔵 principals are doing the best they can with what they have at their disposal & sometimes more than their best
🔵 teachers are mothers & fathers of kids who go to school too
🔵 some kids are delighted for a day off
We have a really good opportunity with the new Online Safety Bill to build in protective mechanisms to empower players if they are targeted or abused online, to make a complaint, outside of the structures of the social media companies #OSMRBill
Everyday on Twitter you see people who made a report for an abusive tweet and they get no response, so we need to have a mechanism in the #OSMRBill to protect people by providing for an individual complaints mechanism
One of the best movies of the year. Dripping in satire which would be even funnier if the social commentary it’s ripping the piss out of wasn’t so close to reality
The influence & power of large tech / #socialmedia companies on government policy is hammed up in #DontLookUp but it’s only a representation of what really happens & why we have to ensure that they should not be permitted to continue to self regulate
How modern society can be at times shallow and fickle is brilliantly exposed in #DontLookUp & how important issues are trivialised into media friendly sound bites for viewer numbers
