The theme of #WSPD2022 is “Creating hope through action.” It calls for collective action to address suicide prevention. ImageImage
Meaning that all of us - family, friends, co-workers, community, educators, religious leaders, healthcare professionals, politicians & governments - have a crucial role to play and actually can take action to prevent suicides. ImageImageImageImage

It's #WorldSuicidePreventionDay!
As a suicidologist and someone who has experienced chronic suicidality since age 9, I want to offer some insights that mainstream prevention orgs don't often share. 🧵
Suicidal ideation does not mean a person needs to be immediately hospitalized against their will. A significant portion of the population experiences suicidal ideation and never acts on it. I'd argue that it's a "normal" response to many difficult life situations.
Suicidality isn't always episodic. That means that for some people, the desire to die never goes away. We wake up, think about it, and carry on with our day. I've seen this called "grey suicidality" online and it's fairly common. Again, not an emergency.

Today is #WorldSuicidePreventionDay . To all those who have struggled or are struggling, know that you are not alone and I am so proud of you for holding on. If you’re dealing with suicidal thoughts please talk to someone, you don’t have to go through this alone.

As someone who also has a history of struggling with this, I know it’s not easy to reach out and I know what it’s like to not be taken seriously, but talking to someone is so worth it. You can talk to a friend, family member, teacher, or there’s plenty of helplines for you.

There are people who will and want to listen to you. Please don’t be ashamed for reaching out.

Know that you matter, your feelings, your experiences and your struggles are valid and you don’t need to prove yourself to anyone.

Heavy content warning for #WorldSuicidePreventionDay .
Part of my being autistic is that I get what are known as "intrusive thoughts". Fairly frequently they will involve thoughts of suicide. They pop out of nowhere and can be gone as quickly as they came. 1/
They used to scare me. I have in my life attempted it twice. The funny thing now is that they are almost "reassuring". I have had those thoughts so often that I know I won't act on them. On neither of the occasions that I did try did the thought just "pop in". 2/
It built up, it festered. I felt I couldn't talk to anyone about it so I let it get worse. I felt guilty at first for the feelings, which pushed me further and further, until I made the decision and at that point I felt calm. 3/

5 things you should never say to a suicidal person

#Thread #WorldSuicidePreventionDay #AvonsPracticalTips #HealthyLiving
1. “Suicide is selfish and Cowardly.”

This guilt trip is quite common but many people who consider suicide think their existence is a burden to the people they love. 'Self' is the last thing they care about.
#WorldSuicidePreventionDay #AvonsPracticalTips
Also, it's counterproductive to help someone by shaming them? Naturally, people would do everything possible to avoid death. We won't say suicide is brave but overcoming the fear of death isn't cowardly.

Sitting around a table as she chats to a group of people, Scarlett Moffatt leans forward to say something.

🗣️ ‘I don’t think of you as ordinary people you could pass in Asda, I think of you as little angels,’ she tells them. ‘I don’t know what I’d have done without you.’ (Picture: Raoul Dixon/NorthNews)

1/ Today is #WorldSuicidePreventionDay, & soon #TruthAndReconciliation day, so lets talk about Indigenous Suicide.

Most organizations will talk about the frequency of white suicide, but, male or female, youth Indigenous suicides are as/more common and poorly discussed.
2/ In the US, Indigenous suicide in BOYS & YOUNG MEN is as common as the well-discussed "middle age white men" group, and late in life we see the escalation of white suicide.

In women, INDENGENOUS GIRLS and YOUNG WOMEN have as high a suicide rate as the middle age white peak. ImageImage
3/ In Canada, Indigenous suicide is THREEFOLD more common than non-Indigenous suicide. And for Inuit, NINEFOLD. For Inuit men in Inuit Nunangat, the risk is THIRTYFOLD higher in the young adult age group. ImageImageImage

Okay, time for a serious tweet. Today (September 10) was #WorldSuicidePreventionDay and so I want to re-up two threads (one is inside the other) sharing a few highlights of my mental health journey. This has been a really difficult time for so many.
Since both threads (from May '20 and June '18), I've had setbacks and struggles. I say that because mental health isn't something that simply ends and disappears. It's something you constantly work at and anything (or anyone) can send you back #WorldSuicidePreventionDay
My DMs are open and I'm always willing to talk, in part because often times I didn't feel like (and knew) I had people in my corner or at least ones that was educated about, could grapple with, and/or understand mental health. #WorldSuicidePreventionDay

I know this is #WorldSuicidePreventionDay and I say this with total sincerity because I take it issue seriously -- CNN and MSNBC is bad for your mental health. Joy Reid, Brian Stelter, Jim Acosta, Brianna Keilar, Chris Hayes, etc. WANT you to be in a mentally-crippled state.
If you're scared for your life, hiding under your bed, afraid to go outside, and thus struggling with your mental faculties, then CNN and MSNBC will see their job as successful.
They talk about Trump as the ultimate fear-mongerer, but every story casting doubt on the vaccine, suggesting Trump doesn't care about you, six feet might not be enough for social distancing, the mere act of going outside could kill you, it's all meant to cripple you in fear.

One of the scariest experiences a person can have is hearing a loved one say they want to die. While it can be tempting to dismiss it as being attention-seeking, it's important to take them seriously.

Here's how to really help.

#AvonsPracticalTips #WorldSuicidePreventionDay Image
1. Decide if the risk is imminent

If your friend is at risk of attempting suicide soon, call for help immediately. Imminent danger includes a person in possession of a weapon, pills, or other means to follow through with suicide.
#AvonsPracticalTips #WorldSuicidePreventionDay
1b. If possible, don't leave them alone and do your best to remove any possible means they can use to hurt themselves.
