For #WorldSuicidePreventionDay I want to say something (else I guess since I already said something in another thread) to people like me who have struggled with suicidal thoughts/ideation:

You don't have to reach out.

Here's what I mean:
[TW: suicide]

On days like today, when there're calls for awareness, for understanding, there are so many people saying "Reach out!" "If you're struggling reach out!" "If you're having a hard time reach out!"

"I'm here for you!"
"If you ever need to talk, message me!"
[TW: suicide]

And these things are meant with the best of intentions I know. They're meant to make us feel less alone, less isolated

but what can happen, what happens to me at least, is I feel an immense amount of pressure

So it's #WorldSuicidePreventionDay / #WSPD2019.

Been going back and forth on this one all day.

But seeing the samaritans at the station on my way home from work pushed me over the line I think.

A sign maybe.

I think I'm finally ready to talk about this.

OK. Let's go.
June 5th, 2017 I tried to take my own life.
And I'm sharing this because fuck me this shit is important.

If this saves one life, it's worth it.

If this stops one of you, it's worth it.

If this makes you DM me instead of going for a walk and never coming back, it's worth it.

So yeah. This is hard. But it's time.

So @Hyper_RPG did something daring last night...

They had half an episode of main characters talking through their collective shit and discovering how fucked up they really are...

Which allowed characters to chose between Actualization vs Rectification...

Actualization is this context means having the characters realize their behavior (good or bad) and continuing along with that path or behavior just with a little bit self-awareness...

Ex: Mickey(s) accepting the choices that she (they-plural) made up to this point #KOllOK1991
Rectification on the other hands involves changing for the better (or what is perceived as better). It is the self-awareness that ones flaws need to be changed and the work that it involves...

Ex: Billy not using his destructive powers and making selfless decisions #KOllOK1991

I wanted to share my suicide survival story for the first time. Reliving these brutal, painful and private moments isn’t easy. But it is cathartic to share it. So, here goes... #WorldSuicidePreventionDay
The 1st time I attempted suicide was in August of 1996. I was 18 & entering my freshman year of college. Pre-season has just started. I accepted the scholarship to the local college b/c my then-girlfriend told me if I accepted an out-of-State scholarship, that we’d break up
So I stayed in Milwaukee. Well, a month before college actually starts, I find out she was pregnant by some other guy. My world was flipped upside down. I told my assistant coach that I was having suicidal thoughts. He cried, but took me to a mental hospital...

For #WorldSuicidePreventionDay I'm going to tell you about my first hospitalization.

I'm going to tell you why you should never commit a someone unless they explicitly say so

I'm going to tell you why I still have nightmares.

CW// suicide, selfharm, transphobia
I want to tell this story for a few reasons. Firstly because it is my story and I have a right to tell it. Secondly because it may help someone. Thirdly because the population at large seems unaware of what hospitalization actually means. I'm going to try to change that.
I was hospitalized June 26th, 2018 following a failed attempt at suicide by pills. I had attempted the day before and had woken up alive.

My roommates, concerned, called a wellness check on me from the university. The police arrived. I was put in handcuffs and brought to the ER

1/ Suicide prevention and awareness require honesty, secularism and harm reduction

Yesterday I spent a long time ruminating on a background level of anger against some local okies who keep parroting

2/ that my young friend's suicide was an "accidental overdose", repeating the word "accidental" a thousand times. Why did this bother me so much?

3/ The kid is dead. Nothing will change that. I know why: because lying about suicide and under-reporting it is going against everything I have been fighting for. The damn Midwestern right wing devangelicals at it again. Damn.

Lots of valuable important chatter on the social medial today about #WorldSuicidePreventionDay. Much of it share phone numbers for hotlines and recommendations to seek help or take the person to the ER.

None of that is bad advice.
It’s also what isolates people suffering from depression. It makes them afraid to tell others how they are feeling.

When I think about killing myself, I don’t want a phone number and a ride to the ER. I want someone to ask, “What does that feel like?”
I want someone to come down in the hole with me for a minute.

It was a bit late when i realized that my joints, spine and knee pain is because of stress and depression. Before that i couldn't understand what exactly depression is, how it feels? So, last year my eyes started swelling and I went
.. blind for some hours. I was admitted to hospital when doctors said i had an infection but i had some stress too that triggered it. Well, story goes on. I was suffering from back pain and knee pain for 10 years and no doctor could be able to diagnose what's causing the pain..
.. eventually back in october last year my life experiences started changing upside down, my relations with friends and family bungled. It was really hard for me to cope from it because friends weren't there to counsel and there's a little room in families for talking ..

Here’s the ugly side of being a doctor. The side I don’t usually talk about.

I never wanted to be a doctor.

I wanted to research stuff, I was intrigued by the world
I wanted to speak to thousands at once
Dance, act, make people smile

Restore ideals
Change values
But here I am.
The buck stops with me.
I’m in a war zone here.
I’m not in the war.
I just watch it.
And try to stop it.
There too many dead people on my mind and in my heart.

You can tell yourself you are helping someone.
That what you do matters.
But the truth is.
People live and die and life goes on.

Today is #WorldSuicidePreventionDay , and I want to tell you a very personal story about why this is so important. Suicide has affected me in numerous ways, and it's a conversation everyone should have. Not just with others, but with ourselves. So here we go. Please listen.
A few years ago I lost my best friend Joel to suicide. We'd been buddies for twenty years. We fuckin did everything together. Joel had my back and I had his. We were true brothers. Joel had dreams of marriage and a career in therapy. The whole world was in front of him.

Joel was bipolar, and in his later years his life had taken turns he was deeply unhappy with. A string of failed relationships ended in him dropping out of college, working dead-end jobs, and moving back in with his parents. He grew haggard and developed severe self-loathing.

[Mental health thread] So important to raise awareness of suicide, especially for fellow sufferers of depression/anxiety. I want to give a special shout out to those doing a PhD. #WorldSuicidePreventionDay #AcademicChatter
One period during graduate school was the worst for me. A particularly dark few weeks and months pushed me to the edge. Being a man brought up with normative masculine values it was hard to confront the problem, but I did. At the time it's almost impossible to imagine getting
to the next day, let alone having a future. However, much of what I have done that I am proud of in life happened after that episode.I know it is easy to think 'no one can feel as bad as I feel', but they do. So keep hope, seek help, and overcome the stigma.

1) Lost 7 male pals over 10 yrs to #Suicide & the devastation does not ease.
I don't do 'feels', but perhaps you'll gleam something useful from my rambling account of what it leaves behind.
I'm not subtle, for that I cannot apologise.
2) Long term friendships disappear, as you begin to find remaining pals are nothing but a reminder.
When all your socialising & reminiscing is related to the dead, it becomes less inviting.
When the things you have in common are death-related, your relationship changes.
3) The family of the dead are never the same.
Mothers devastated. Sisters broken. Children damaged.
That constant feeling you have let them down, knowing you HAVE let them down, because you were helpless, useless, & ultimately irrelevant when it mattered. It bites bad.

You know what doesn't stop suicide? Posting a Facebook update every six months in response to a celebrity's suicide that says, "If you ever feel like killing yourself, reach out to me." Or, "I'm always here for you. Call me if you need me."

You know what DOES stop suicide? Talking to people you care about. Listening to their problems. Especially being mindful of and being present in the lives of loved ones that you *know* are at-risk of suicide because of depression, anxiety or PTSD.

I tried suicide. I failed. I have several friends who tried. A couple of them succeeded. No one is going to reach out to you if you haven't stretched a hand to them. And occasional words, directed at no one are not an outstretched hand.

Today is #WorldSuicidePreventionDay

One of the most important things we can do to fight the growing epidemic of suicide in America is talk about it. We have a really bad problem that is getting worse quickly, but we can't help people if we ignore their problems. 1/
First a few notes on the problem, and what we've learned in recent months.

A new CDC shows that the incidence of suicide in the US has risen sharply, by about 30% over the past two decades. 2/…
In addition to veterans, more new groups are also starting to show heightened suicide risk:
- Young women…
- Black children…
- Farmers…
Most of us probably know someone who has experienced suicidal thoughts. 3/

It's apparently #WorldSuicidePreventionDay so:

I've been v deeply suicidal at various stages of my life, for various reasons. Friends, family and meds have helped me get to a stage where I'm mentally healthier than ever and it doesn't cross my mind for weeks at a time ♥️
My worst suicidal period, and the time I was most in danger, I was still going to work, uni, and probably didn't seem much other than a bit down. Friends & family helped me feel safe enough to admit how bad it was and get better support - providing that space is so important!
Also every suicidal period for me has been triggered by structural issues, such as being put on a 2 year waiting list for medical conditions causing chronic pain, or being flat out broke from being unemployed and unable to get benefits. It's not a coincidence.

Folks tell me it has helped when I've talked about it, so here goes - as many of you know I've struggled with depression & anxiety for 20 years.

In that time, I've had many myths busted about those two buggers. Here's the top 5... 1/ #WorldSuicidePreventionDay
5. 'You need to be stuck in bed all day to *really* have depression.'

Don't get me wrong - some can really be affected that way. However, you can be severely depressed & very much upright.

I went through a number of jobs, very ill & wondering why I couldn't perform - Duh! 2/
I figured that because I could get out of bed and front up to work, I wasn't Ill.

Never mind that my illness was seriously fatigued, that it was impacting my communication skills - I could barely look people in the eye!

Let me tell you the story of when I first encountered someone who did experience suicidal thoughts @theresa_may. It was a few months ago when an EU citizen emailed me late one evening expressing them. This was someone I didn’t know. But yes, I asked them if they’re ok. 1/
In fact: I offered to talk to them and did so till 2:30am in the morning. I’m not a psychologist, but what was I supposed to do... Why was the person so distressed? Because their PR application had been rejected and they now feared for their future. Whether it’s suicidal 2/
thoughts or other mental health issues, such as depression or anxiety, your policies are directly responsible for thousands of people feeling stressed and unwell *every single day*. #WorldSuicidePreventionDay would be a good day for you to reflect on that. 3/

Today is #WorldSuicidePreventionDay and while I usually wouldn't participate in hashtags, this one is of particular importance to me. Here's some of the most important statistics regarding suicide in our society today.
In the last 20 years suicide rates have increased by around 25%. More than half of those who died by suicide, had not been diagnosed with a mental health condition. There are only three causes of death which are increasing year over year: drug overdoses, Alzheimer's, and suicide.
Women are four times more likely to attempt suicide, while men are five times more likely to die by suicide. Men are far more likely to use lethal means (firearm, hanging) while women are more likely to use para-lethal means such as self-poisoning with medications.

Good morning, beloveds.

In 2013, which I affectionately refer to as The Year Of All The Mistakes, I lived in a friend's basement for six months.

And one day I laid on the floor of the bathroom furious with everyone who loved me -- because it meant I couldn't kill myself.
I had ended the relationship I thought I'd be in forever. I wasn't sure anyone would ever want to marry me. I had no idea where I was going to live. I wanted to become a pastor but felt like a complete failure at my internship.

My ever-present depression had taken a death grip.
I felt ashamed to reach out, because I didn't want anyone to know how bad it was. I wanted to look strong. I didn't want to burden someone.

And I was so, so angry that people loved me.

I knew I couldn't die, and I lay there absolutely furious.
