I've studied why Igbos excel in business and here are my findings.
A thread
Many people don't realize this, but a huge part of the reasons why Igbos Excell in business has to do with our culture
Before an Igbo man will start wearing good clothes & showing off, be sure that his account balance has become fat. We don't believe in fake-it-till-you-make-it
The Igbo man will have N3 million in his account and still be wearing bathroom slippers and a dirty T-Shirt to Alaba everyday. You'd think he's stupid. Wait till you hear that he owns three shopping malls in Alaba.
The Igbo culture shamelessly encourages delayed gratification.
Competition: The Igbos thrive on competition--among friends, among families, among cousins. No one wants to be left behind
Agreed, this has advantages & disadvantages.
Do you know that in family meeting, a rich member can use money to shut a poor one up?
Ask your Igbo friend
Shamelessness: When it comes to money, the Igbo man is shameless. A friend told me that he was 'packing' cow dung in Abuja & people thought he was stupid but he was a millionaire
Unlike startups where you get funding before starting a busines, the Igbo businesman believes in organic growth.
If you take a random uneducated 25-year old boy from a random Southeastern state and drop him in Alaba International Market with only N10,000 in his pocket, in a
year's time, he'd likely be making far more money than the average Lagos graduate.
He'll start calling customers, taking them to random shops and selling stuff to them and taking the profit. Before you know it, things are falling in place.
Igbo Kwenu!
