namjoon’s brilliant lyricism and wordplays in songs – an appreciation thread

“I was just a person, but you eroded my edges and turned me into love” — trivia 承: love

~in korean, person is (사람) saram where the last consonant "ㅁ" becomes "ㅇ" after eroding its corners, then it becomes love (사랑) sarang.

“Told me it's impossible but look carefully,
Placing a period on impossible
I'm possible” — We are Bulletproof pt. 2

~ putting a period/space on 'impossible', it becomes 'im possible'. namjoon shows how the word 'impossible' tells us that it's always possible.

“Oh, can I be your Bibilly Hills, like you did the same to me” — Telepathy

Bibilly Hills comes from 비빌언덕 (Beverly Hills), which means something/someone that you can lean on (for support). He asked us to lean on him for our comfort.

“You're my Miss Right, Miss Right.
If I lose you, it’s a miss, right? Miss Right? ” — Miss Right.

~ namjoon expressing his romantic self by using same words "miss right" but in different meanings whereas the latter means if he loses her, it'll be a miss/fail for him.

‘Us’ is just a plural of ‘U’ — 134340

~ here he says that ‘us’ (two persons) is the plural or multiple of ‘you’ (one person). after putting a 's' after 'u', he actually made 'us' “the plural of 'you'”. namjoon also uses ‘pluto’ as a metaphor for human relation.

“I've been calling your name in this universe, now i need no space, i got YOUniverse” — Heartbeat

~he was searching for love in this universe,as he got 'YOUniverse'(ARMYSs) ,he now doesn't want 'space' or to be away from his love (ARMYs). He used YOUniverse to describe ARMYS.

~ again namjoon's romantic self came beaming through when he says though love is really complicated, his loved one is amaze/amazing.

“Treat me like a comma, I'll take you to a new phase” — waste it on me

~ A comma usually puts a stop to a sentence and starts a new one. so,joon asked us to think of him as a comma so that he can take us to a ‘new phase’, ending the current one to a better world / life.

“I'm ill” in dis-ease has two english meanings and two korean meanings.

1. ill = diseased
2. ill = sick/cool
3. il = number one(korean)
4. ill = work (meaning he's the work itself,all he does is work)

“여긴 왕국, 나는 킹 너는 덤 [dum]” — cypher pt.2
trans: This is a kingdom, I’m a king, you’re dumb.

~namjoon used really intelligent wordplay here, it can be explained in 2 ways still it'll be insult to haters all the same.

~His whole lyricism of "I Believe" leaves me taken aback. Here he wanted to show believing in others is quite easy but believing in Yourself is the toughest. But he believes in Himself and he lives in himself. The wordplay of 'Believe' and 'Live'.

"Joke" is the song where Namjoon shows off his technical skills as a rapper and gets some shots in at those who to degrade him because he’s an idol. This section is one of the most impressive where he uses the phrase “je pae” 6 different ways at the end of each line.Trans:2nd pic

1. as a 'thorn' - symbolizing a negative trait
2. as 'visibility' - symbolizing perspectives or views
