Thread on the many Afghan webinars. Yesterday in one of the webinars with a large number of experts including generals and US policy experts, I raised 2 points. got no answer. In fact these points appear to be very very foreign to our analysts. I would like your reaction to these
1. All our analysts are interested in interfering in Afghanistan and foreign policy. Domestic issues and domestic economy seems to be a very very very discreet subject for them.
2. Why do we accept narratives like war on terror? And that this war is a threat and it emanates from poor Afghanistan. Yet the real war on terror —white supremacy— no one talks of. White supremacy is more likely to create wars than poor colored ppl.
Sadly our ppl don’t want to raise these issues but talk only white supremacy language.

Come on guys. No one interested in our economy our domestic issues

They have got us where they want us. 5th generating war.

Thread housing society. Housing societies happen only in Pakistan. They arise out of a PLOT culture that was handed to us by the British. The colonial government would give out land as a gift to those who are loyal
Corporate is the set up in law to help poor farmers come together and do things that were individually more difficult. Soon after petition bureaucrats started using the cooperatives law to start housing societies.
Housing societies would use the power of the government to acquire land and transfer it good rich and powerful a cheap prices. This is despite the fact that the land acquisition act did not allow the taking of land for anything other than public purpose

read on day 2 @PIDEpk webinar on education. Role of government in education

1. We wish government canmake quality education. Yet all agree that government is incapable of doing the task. W/o comprehensive should we overloading government with tasks?
2. There was agreement that the decentralization and diversity in education delivery down to the school level was necessary and critical to the development of higher education.
3. Definition of an education policy proved to be very difficult. Education for all important but how and what instruments is unclear.

Thread on cities. 1. A city has to have dense mixed-use neighborhoods that are based on apartment living and walkability for most uses, play work study. link.medium.com/AGXaMi1RHZ
2. What is not walkable must be bikable. Cars do not have priority in cities. Make less room for cars means more for people and even public transport.
3. It is easier to make public transport in cities where cars are not given a free pass. In pakistan the priority to cars has crowded out walkability and bicycles as well as public transport. WE HAVE SUBSIDIZED CARS THRU OUR HISTORY. link.medium.com/JsP4LIYRHZ

Thread on Pakistan economic policy.
1. Our policy still remains the old mahbub ul Haq strategy:projects looking for aid and loans. We never think merely repeat past. This is at the heart of our repeated bop crisis.
2. All governments rush into vanity projects (eg metros, roads, Brock and mortar) because they follow the old Mahbub ul Haq model. Such projects are not well understood analyzed or planned. The result is more debt and increasing problems of poor planning. .
3. MOF has poor budget planning and implementation procedures. Their method is to give into vested interest and political power and do fiscal control by ill planned austerity in departments. They are unaware that “austerity” is globally considered to be bad policy.
