This is symptomatic of how intrusive and nonsensical DMCA really is as a law that has proven itself to be detrimental to content creators and music rights on the internet, and desperately needs to be radically overhauled or abolished altogether. Read more below...
According to DMCA (or atleast the way it's enforced by Amazon/Google), if you play even a SECOND of a copywritten song like say, Moonchild by Iron Maiden, you are breaching copyright law and you need to stop immediately or face class action lawsuit...
...No you can't do a cover of that song either. xoxo
Now let me explain to you why cracking down on music bots made for Discord (and by extension Youtube and Twitch) for breaking copyright law makes no sense...
Saying you are breaking DMCA rules by playing copywritten music through a music bot on Discord, is like going into a bar/restaurant and demanding you shut off their jukebox.
You seeing the problem here yet?
Imagine if this law was enforced in these public venues tho. You're up on stage singing Moonlight Shadow by Maggie Reilly, and someone, apparently a lawyer assigned to uphold DMCA, overhears you singing that song and barges in demanding you shut up or you will end up in court.
The music they play in those venues is the exact same case with music bots made for Discord.
The copywritten music that content creators and Discord users play is either for background noise or the ingredient behind creator's content, NOT the focal point.
Hell DMCA apparently doesn't do a good job of upholding copyright law on the internet at all, so what good is DMCA (Digital Millennium Copyright) for other than to give companies the power to basically put a sign down on social sites saying "no fun allowed"?
It is beyond me at this point why nobody's making a bigger fuss about this since this law was enacted all the way back at the turn of the millennium, but I'll tell you what this rampant abuse in which DMCA is enforced needs to STOP.
thefreelibrary.com/Why+the+DMCA+N… We need to start a movement (dunno if there's one already) that demands a complete overhaul of DMCA here, or scrap it entirely and replace it with a new internet copyright bill fit for the 21st century.
Nothing to promote here since I barely use this shithole website these days, but I wanted to make this rant thread because I'm sick to the teeth of the fact that not even Discord is safe from this bullshit.
I also want to make a point that lawyers are not the bad guys here, unfair laws like DMCA, and the corporations that enforce them arbitrarily, are.
