After 7 years, my time leading Marketing at @trello has come to a close.
It's been a wild startup roller coaster ride, from scrappy beginnings to scaling to acquisition and integration with @Atlassian.
Some ideas from building the most popular project mgmt tool of all time 🧵
1. It's always about the people. That's it.
I've been "lucky" by always choosing to work with people who have the most integrity.
People who care about making a difference in the world. Having pride in quality of work. Being values driven, and living their values every day.
2. As a leader, be people focused.
Always focus on developing your team and building relationships.
These transcend projects, even remote. Ppl remember how you treat them in difficult times-leaders show true colors, build up trust that is required to build psychological safety
3. Invest in yourself. Invest in your craft.
Carve out time for personal development. Structured learning, or doing projects that stretch you.
Do things that scare you or make you feel imposter syndrome- that's where growth lies.
4. Delegate. Challenge your people.
In the beginning leaders want to do it all. In time, they figure out how to scale themselves. Hire people who are smarter and have complementary skills.
Give feedback frequently. Make it a practice across the team to elevate each other's work
5. Focus on culture.
If you're not having fun and living your values, what's the point?
Trello and my team have an amazing culture, built over years of fun times and shipping, both remotely and in person. We never take ourselves too seriously.
6. What's next?
Life is a journey, and time is precious.
Seems like people are pressured to have every next move figured out.
I'm excited to take a breath and look around.
That being said, I'm actively angel investing and enjoying helping startups early in their journeys.
