Definitely need that at schools. But also need that at news outlets once the students graduate. My "apprenticeship" was as valuable as a master's, I imagine. (I didn't go to grad school, so I'm guessing. I'm a commuter school kid.)
Another reason "apprenticeship" is important: Not everyone can afford a @HowardCenterASU, Columbia, Northwestern, Mizzou. I went to junior college then a commuter 4-year that had a fine student paper (shout out, @UTAShorthorn). On-the-job investigative training was crucial.
People like @nixonron@kat__stafford talk about expanding access to investigative training. And when you're new, sometimes on-the-job is how you get exposure, if you weren't fortunate enough to have family assistance getting into the elite J-schools. (I'm first-gen college grad.)
Without my Mt. Rushmore of mentors (from my first freelance job covering sports to AP), I wouldn't have made it this far. I'm amazed, looking back, at how they gave me a chance and showed such patience. Glad editors like @nixonron are out helping young'uns as my mentors did.
