73 new cases of COVID-19 over 3 days announced in Nova Scotia today (Monday, Sept. 13) /thread
Of the new cases, 36 are in the Northern Zone, 31 are in the Central Zone, 4 are in the Eastern Zone, and 2 are in the Western Zone. Details downthread.
There are now 125 known active cases in the province. 1 person is in hospital with the disease, but not in ICU.
Of the new cases: 27 are aged 19 or under; 26 are aged 20-39; 12 are aged 40-59; 5 are aged 60-79; and 1 is aged 80 or older. I realize this only adds up to 71, and I don't have an explanation for that. Regardless, in NS, the pandemic is now largely a pandemic of younger people.
The vaccination status of new cases is reported on Fridays. I've asked that the 19 and under age cohort be broken into 0-11 (completely unvaccinated) and 12-19 (highly vaccinated); Dr. Strang has agreed that's important info, but it's still not provided.
According to the Dept. of Health: "There is a large cluster of linked cases in a defined group in Northern Zone. Most of the group is unvaccinated, so more cases are expected."
Also: "There are signs of community spread among those in Central Zone aged 20 to 40 who are unvaccinated and participating in social activities. "
So far as Central Zone cases go: 123 are 19 or younger' 13 are aged 20-39; 5 are aged 40-59; and 1 is aged 60-79.
So far as Central Zone case go: 12 are 19 or younger; 13 are aged 20-39; 5 are aged 40-59; and 1 is aged 60-79
For Northern Zone: 17 are aged 19 or younger; 10 are aged 20-39; 5 are aged 40-59; 3 are aged 60-79; and 1 is 80 or older
Of the new cases:
• 36 Northern Zone — 32 close contacts, 3 travel, 1 under investigation
• 31 Central Zone — 11 close contacts, 9 travel, 11 under investigation
• 4 Eastern Zone — 3 travel, 1 under investigation
• 2 Western Zone — 1 close contact, 1 travel
UPDATE: 4 people are in hospital with the disease, but none in ICU (Dashboard wasn't fully updated when I reported 1 above; I regret the error).
In total, over Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, 4,988 doses of vaccine were administered — 2,929 second doses and 2,059 first doses.
At end of day yesterday, 78.7% of the entire population (including young children) have received at least 1 dose of vaccine, and 72.5% have received 2 doses. However...
Those percentages do not include military personnel stationed in NS — which Dr. Strang has repeatedly said count 8,000 — who were vaccinated by the military. If they are included, the double-dosed percentage rises to 73.4% MORE
I honestly can't see how we get to 75% double-dosed by end of day tomorrow. Or even Wednesday. Again: Dr. Strang gives the 8,000 number. The population figure the province uses is 971,395, and when I calculate the percentages independently, they match the province's percentages.
Do I think it much matters if, say, 74.2% is double-dosed instead of 75.0%? Probably not, in any epidemiological sense. MORE
But we've been repeatedly told 75% is a hard target, and there won't be any fudging of percentages. Unless 15,909 people receive their 2nd dose today and tomorrow, there's a lot of fudging going on.
Premier Tim Houston and Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Robert Strang have scheduled a COVID briefing for tomorrow at 3pm.
I missed typed here. It's 12 — not 123 — under 19.
I'll have more in a full article that I'll publish in a bit.

It's hard to argue with @IainTRankin about this: "COVID-19 rapid testing helped crush the third wave — we can't stop now"
Hey, I got a raise! Thanks, all!

73 is a big number. I too am worried! But, I'm gonna speak a tiny bit out of turn here...
First, from my understanding, about half of that is an inter-connected group of unvaccinated people. If the rumours are correct, that's of almost no concern to the rest of us (I'll leave it at that), but obviously, we should care about those who have covid, regardless.
The other half is basically 10 a day or so, and about half of those are travel-related. Again: it's not good that people are sick, but this is a continuation of the trend of the last week or so.

I’m at Victoria Park, speaking with people dismantling their tents. They each tell me the shelters are full, and they have no idea where they’ll go.
Each has a different story, have been living precariously for many months. Some are on disability. One was living with his father, but the landlord said they were violating rules about # of people per unit.
They note that Eric, the Street Navigator, just went on vacation to get married. He had helped them throughout, and the evictions were timed around his vacation

Dr. Strang, white courtesy phone please.
Strang has repeatedly and consistently been against what he calls "coercive" strategies for vaccination, saying they may be counterproductive. (Argue with that all you want, I'm just stating his stance.) By coming out for a "Scotia Pass," Rankin politicized the issue. MORE
And Strang then when silent, ending all public briefings, so reporters were unable to ask him about Rankin's proposal. The office of Chief Medical Officer of Health was therefore politicized. That's not entirely Strang's fault, but it is a fact. MORE

1 new case of COVID-19 announced in Nova Scotia today (Tuesday, August 17) /thread
The new case is in Nova Scotia Health's Central Zone and is related to travel.
There are now 22 known active cases in the province. 1 person is in hospital with the disease, and that person is in ICU. There are additionally 3 people considered recovered, which means they are no longer considered contagious, not necessarily that they're not still sick.
