We will be live-tweeting tonights Tower Hamlets Development Committee meeting where they will decide whether to approve the Truman Brewery's plans to build a shopping mall and corporate offices on #BrickLane
Councillors present at the previous planning meeting and inside the council hall will be allowed to vote on today's decision.
Paul Buckingham, who is Tower Hamlet's Development manager, is recommending councillors approve the Truman Brewery Development.
Tower Hamlets Planning Officer Patrick Harmsworth presenting why the council should approve the proposed shopping mall and offices on top at the Truman Brewery.
7,122 people sent in letters opposing the Truman Brewery development in April 2021. Only 80 letters in support were sent through.
Chair Abdul Mukit asking Tower Hamlets planning officers their opinion on the corporate companies that will come into the area and their impact on local businesses.
Patrick Harmsworth from Tower Hamlets Council: "We are cognisant of levels of objection, but planning deals with the building not the occupants."
Mukit asking again about the impact corporate companies could have on local businesses and how rising prices and poverty has driven out previous communities, including Huguenots and Irish.
Buckingham pushes back and says the planning system has no power to change or impact that reality. Pitiful.
Patrick Harmsworth thinks the Truman Brewery's proposed changes to the building aesthetic will not attract too many corporate clients
Kevin Brady says he will vote in favour of the Truman Brewery's application and believes it would be pointless to decline as it would be approved in an appeal.
Abdul Mukit says he is not convinced by the Truman Brewery's application and says he will be voting against the proposal.
Kahar Choudhry will be voting for the application and said rejecting the proposal would be "unfair" to the applicant, i.e. Truman Brewery.
BREAKING: Tower Hamlets Planning Committee has voted for the Truman Brewery proposal.
This evening the Development Committee of @TowerHamletsNow voted IN FAVOUR of the Truman Brewery redevelopment proposal by a margin of 1. 🧵
Today's decision ultimately came down to the votes of just two Labour councillors : Cllr @Kevin_J_Brady and Cllr @KaharChowdhury - both of whom sided with profiteers this evening. Councillior Leema Qureshi was not allowed to vote because she was self isolating at home.
The Save Brick Lane campaign, on the other hand, has engaged & mobilised hundreds of locals & residents in and around Brick Lane. It is they that have made it clear to us that they reject this proposal, & resent politics as usual under Tower Hamlets Council.
Since this campaign began a year ago, we have collected thousands of objections, gained the support of more than 140 traders & businesses on Brick Lane, knocked on more than hundreds of doors and alerted supporters around the world 🌎
We have built a coalition that has kept Tower Hamlets Council and the Mayor on edge.
This campaign is a clear expression of the people versus the profiteers. ✊🏽
