I’ve paid more stupid tax than I care to add up, yet I’ve tried my best to not repeat the same mistakes twice.

Here are 10 things that I wish I learned to years ago.

Never leap from little information to big conclusions. If you don’t know enough, keep searching.

Doubt is not a pleasant condition, but certainty is absurd. No one knows everything about anything. There are always variables that you cannot predict. Learn to be less certain about the things that you think you know, and you will become better about planning for the unlikely.

You are doomed to repeat what you don’t repair. All of us make mistakes, only some of will figure out what went wrong and how to fix it so it won’t come back around again to hurt us.

When deciding to do something new: It’s either hell yes, or it’s no. If it looks mediocre or marginal, move on. There are great things to do out there that are worth your time, keep digging until you find them, then go all in.

Learn to contribute to Twitter. (Or any real or virtual community you are part of) Don’t just consume, instead be determined to show up with something. Often the best contributions are a few well thought out questions that you ask in public for others to help work through.

Set crazy big goals that both scare you and inspire you deep in your core. If you don’t know where you are going than you aren’t making progress. Be willing to stop everything and figure out where you want to get, then get after it.

Become incredibly organized. Find a great task management system that works well with your brain type and USE IT. All the time, every day. (Bonus: I use an app called Things on Mac/iPhone/Apple Watch that is life-changing)

Become amazing at shining the spotlight on others genius. It is great to spend time developing your own skills, but the secret level-up is when you learn to enhance other’s superpowers. This works for people above and below you on a team.

Say out loud the excuses you have for not living the life you want. Are they bullshit? Many of us make up garbage roadblocks that stand in our way, we tell ourselves that we can’t do X because Y is stopping us. Don’t let pretend problems hold you back.
