The phenomenon Karlin is noticing is actually quite interesting. What has changed is not an increase in Chinese nationalism but a demographic shift of it's constituency. 30 years ago, the Nationalists were basically Sovoks, while the elites were barely restrained Zradists.

The biggest pro-American liberals in China were those born in the 60's and 70's who are today in their 50's. What has happened is that those born in the 80's and 90's and 2000's are less instinctively awestruck than before even as they are less reflexively hostile than those who
came of age during the age of Mao. Each succeeding decade sees this trend accelerate. Less uncritically accepting of what the West has to say about itself or China, wariness about it's intentions, and now even a rising feeling of contempt and hostility for Western society, seeing
it not as something to be emulated but as a warning of what should be avoided. The age of innocence has ended. Likewise the seemingly quixotic results of those more familiar with Taiwan more interested in pursuing war. The Sovoks still labor under the delusion of peaceful Chinese
on both sides of the straights hammering out their political differences. Those with more intimate knowledge know that Taiwan is ruled by outright Han Jian and that the magnanimity directed toward Taiwan has been met with spit in our faces and now is the time for fire and steel.
