Anyone who thinks the media isn't racist just needs to compare the coverage of the tragic death of Gabby Petito to the many missing and murdered Black and Indigenous women in America. I mean, we could just stick to Florida
and it would still be shameful.

The Black and Missing Foundation does the same for Black people. 36% of the people who are reported missing in America are Black. 0% of the media's missing person frenzies are about a Black woman.

Seriously, the media gets called out for their racist indifference to Black and Indigenous missing women every time they have a frenzy about a missing blonde woman. And they never change. They might even report on the disparate coverage, but they still don't change.

Searching for missing Asian women brings back results focused on the single-child policy in China. There is this

Of course, Gabby Petito's death is tragic. Her family and friends are grieving and have suffered extraordinary trauma wondering where she was if she was hurt, in pain, and wondered if every passing moment was the one that would make a difference in whether she lived or died.

But those same thoughts have gone through the minds of the friends and family of missing Black, Native, and other minoritized and marginalized people. They, too, hope and fear. But they are invisible because the media doesn't care unless the missing woman is a blonde white woman

So the pain of worry, grief, and loss is augmented by the obvious indifference of the rest of America. It's a tragedy to have your child go missing. It's a greater tragedy to have your child go missing and nobody care.

And really, the media does not have to do another mea culpa story about how much they ignore minoritized and marginalize people. That's been done a thousand times with no change.

Instead, start giving a damn and start writing stories about them.
