The 2021 Emmys were a regression in diversity and representation Sunday night, with none of the 49 non-white nominees for acting and/or reality hosting receiving awards. 
Shows that received the most recognition at this year’s awards included ‘The Crown,’ ‘Ted Lasso,’ ‘Mare of Easttown,’ and ‘The Queen’s Gambit’—all shows with a predominantly white cast.
Despite the record number of nominations for performers of color and the variety of racially diverse presenters, the first hour of the award show only recognized white performers.
Critics on social media noted the lack of diverse recognition. One user tweeted, ‘Black host, Black announcer hell even Black music. We doing everything but win. #EmmysSoWhite.’

Outside of acting categories, RuPaul Charles of ‘RuPaul’s Drag Race’ eventually became the first person of color recognized, with the show winning in the Outstanding Competition Program category. The win marked Charles' 11th Emmy, the most ever won by a Black artist.
Another victory for artists of color included Michaela Coel's win for Outstanding Writing for a Limited Series for HBO’s ‘I May Destroy You,’ making her the first Black woman awarded in that category.
