So I’ve been a software engineer for over 5 years at this point so let’s do a thread on the 5 lessons I’ve learned in my career so far #tweet100
#1 use your network.
this goes for both inside and outside or your current company. I personally would have saved myself a lot of tears if I had asked people within the company about specific teams before looking for mobility opportunities.
#2 know what you want.
A lot of opportunities will open up for you when you’re clear on exactly what you want to do and can take the next steps to get there. It may seem like you have 10000 options toward you but realistically you have 4.
#3 ask the right questions
Ask questions that lead to more discussions. This allows you to establish your presence and allow you to become more confident in using your voice.
#4 you can recognize the game, but that doesn’t mean you should play it.
Pay attention to the dynamics within your team as well as the broader organization. Check in with yourself to see if it aligns with you and if it doesn’t try and create your own path (or leave)
#5 not every seat at your company is set up for you to get that next promotion.
Some roles really just need you to be there and do the job that needs to get done but it won’t actually get you promoted. The sooner you realize that that the better you can plan.
Feel free to DM me any questions you have about growing your career as a software engineer. I also share more tips on tech and a bunch of other stuff on my Instagram instagram.com/ademusoyo/
