Let's put to bed the seatbelt analogy. This analogy is based on the belief that both seatbelts and masks rest on mounds of evidence that they perform the function to which people put them.

This belief is incorrect.

Seatbelts are backed by studies performed over 50 years from around the world showing that they work. More importantly, they have been proven to work in the real world. There is little debate about this technology; the data is in. Seatbelts work.

On the other hand, researchers have spent a more than a century researching whether masks prevent infection and viral transmission. There is little data that shows masks have any efficacy preventing viral transmission.

In real-world use, researchers studied the efficacy of masks to curb the 1918 pandemic and found no effect of masks. And masks have failed again during this pandemic.

Masks simply have no real world efficacy.

When someone points to seatbelts as an analogy of masks, it shows that they don't know the history of research on masks and seatbelts. They are showing their ignorance.
