After our election, @Mapbox execs promised that there would be no retaliation against organizers. That was a lie.
The retaliation has already started at Mapbox. Organizers are being fired on flimsy excuses, others are being intimidated and threatened. /
In an all-hands two weeks ago, executives told us to take down our Twitter and mapboxworkersunion.org. They told us to stop using MWU icons in slack and MWU backgrounds in meetings, saying “there is no union at Mapbox”. /
They are wrong. There is a union at Mapbox. Mapbox executives want us to stay quiet, because they’re afraid of workers talking about what’s happening at our company.
This thread is a sample of what has been going on: /
One organizer was told by their manager that they would be receiving a poor review. This was a surprise since their manager never indicated they were performing poorly this year. A few days later they were suddenly fired. They have still not seen this supposed poor review. /
Another organizer was abruptly pulled into a meeting with their manager and HR. They were immediately fired with no warning, no written review, and no performance improvement plan. /
A third organizer was grilled by HR for hours. Then they were fired with no severance, no benefits, and two days left before healthcare ran out. In a pandemic. /
Retaliation against workers for union activity is illegal under the NLRA, and Mapbox leadership is willfully disregarding the law while using intimidation to keep us silent. /
We asked management yesterday to stop this illegal behavior. This morning they denied any wrongdoing or the existence of any retaliation at Mapbox. They insist these firings are part of regularly scheduled performance reviews. /
We demand that management stop all retaliation. We are also filing unfair labor practice charges to hold Mapbox leadership accountable for violating labor law. /
