Companies practice price discrimination to maximise their profits. Let’s dive deep into Price Discrimination in a thread 🧵
Price discrimination is a practice of charging different prices from different consumers to maximise their profits and capture the entire consumer surplus.
Consumer Surplus is the entire difference between what a consumer is willing to pay and what he actually paid. It’s the total benefit to the consumer when the price that he’s paying is way lesser than the one he’s willing to pay.
Suppose a consumer is willing to pay Rs.20 or Rs.15 for a small packet of Lays, but he’s getting it for Rs.10. So, it’s an overall benefit to the consumer.
But the producers always try to capture that consumer surplus by charging a higher price so that they can generate more profits from the same product.
Having market power is a necessary condition to exercise price discrimination.
Now there are three types of price discrimination:

●First-Degree Price Discrimination- Practice of charging every customer the max. price they are willing to pay.
●Second-Degree Price Discrimination- Practice of charging different prices for different quantities of the same goods & services.
●Third-Degree Price Discrimination- Practice of dividing the customers into different groups on various bases and charging them accordingly.
Profit maximization is not the only reason for this practice.

▪Companies which provide premium products use price discrimination to enhance/improve the user experience.

▪It opens up the market for lower-income users.

▪It improves the cash flow of the companies.
Following are the examples of price discrimination in daily life 💁🏻‍♂️
Professionals like Doctors, Architects, Accountants etc. charge their customers according to their income. High-income customers are charged a higher fee. Image
Companies like Amazon and Walmart provide quantity discounts to the customer. Customers have to pay a higher price for a smaller quantity than the larger quantity. Image
University students can avail discounts on iPad and MacBooks, provided by Apple. Image
Tableau is a data visualisation software that is free for students for 1 year. Image
Buses charge less from the students and the senior citizens. Image
Companies provide their products at different prices for different periods.

• Spotify charges Rs.129 for 1 month and Rs.1189 for 12 months(savings of Rs. 359)

• Trendlyne App charges Rs. 215 for 1 month and Rs. 2150 for 12 months( savings of Rs. 430) ImageImage
YouTube and Netflix charge for their premium plans for a higher quality of video and audio or better ad-free experience. Image
Airlines like Vistara, Air India, Etihad, etc. charge different prices for the economy and Business class in Air travel. They also charge a higher price for the last-minute booking than a month prior booking for the same seats. Image
Publishing both hardbound and paperback editions of a book also helps publishers to price discriminate. Image
Nescafe provides coffee in different packaging and different variants like Nescafe classic and Nescafe gold. Image
Similarly, Taj Mahal and Red label are offered by Brooke Bond as different variants in the tea leaves industry. Image
Movie theatres like PVR and Cineplex also charge a different price for the same movie, depending upon the rows and the days. Image
Indian Railways charges more for AC first tier or second tier than the third tier or the non AC compartments for reaching the same destination. Image

In 2023, Deepinder Goyal showed a loss-making food-delivery industry how to make a profit

Now, he’s disrupting another such industry: Aviation

Not by running airlines, but by replacing Boeing and Airbus

THREAD: Here’s what Deepinder Goyal is building at LAT Aviation🧵 Image
Currently in India, we have 450+ airstrips, but only ~150 see regular flights.

That means over 2/3rd of our potential goes unused while millions of people in Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities have no choice but to spend hours or even days relying on slow trains or long-distance buses. Image
Deepinder and his co-founder, Surobhi Das (Ex COO, Zomato), saw this problem up close while expanding Zomato across India.

And they kept asking: why can’t flying be as affordable, frequent, and easy as taking a train?

That’s where the idea for LAT Aerospace came in.

Bira91 was once India’s fastest-growing beer, almost beating Kingfisher

Then last year, its bottles suddenly vanished from shelves

The Crazy Part? It wasn’t because demand dropped or taste got worse,

but because of a tiny name change!

THREAD: The bizarre fall of Bira91🧵 Image
Back in 2015, you knew things were about to get interesting if you walked into a party and saw that funky monkey logo on a beer bottle.

That was Bira 91.

And for a while, it was the cool kid of Indian beer. Until everything fell apart in 2024.

Let’s talk about why: Image
Bira was India’s answer to legacy beer. It wasn't strong or sour like Kingfisher or Budweiser.

It was citrusy and slightly sweet.

It called itself a “craft beer”, a term still new in India back then.

And it turns out, the timing was perfect.

It took Elon Musk multiple attempts & failures, & over a billion dollars to perfect his reusable rockets

But Honda just nailed it in its 1st attempt

The Crazy Part? What took Elon 14 years to perfect, Honda did in just 4!

THREAD: Can Honda actually beat Elon at his own game?🧵 Image
When you hear “Honda,” you probably think of an Activa or a Civic.

But BTS, Honda quietly built a small rocket that, on its first flight – went up, came down, and landed with remarkable precision.

Just 37 cm from its target spot. And it did so without any crashes or explosions. Image
Now, at first glance, this might make you think that Honda cracked the code on its first try,

while SpaceX spent years and billions figuring out how to land rockets.

But when you look a little closer, the real story is a bit more complex.

So, Delhi Govt has launched an all-out war: Air Pollution Mitigation Plan 2025

The Crazy Part? If all goes right, Delhi can save ₹7694 Cr a year in medical costs

THREAD: How Delhi could still breathe easy🧵 Image
The Delhi government just released a 25-point plan to clean up the air by 2025.

In 2000, India was home to 23% of world’s blind population

Not due to any major health issues, but something curable in 15 mins:

Cataract.

And yet 22M eyes in India were going blind

The Crazy Part? Now, it’s down to only 5M people!

THREAD: How India got it’s vision back🧵 Image
Imagine you’re 60, from a small village in Bihar.

You’ve lost sight in one eye to cataract. The other is fading fast.

The hospital is 4 hrs away & surgery costs more than your salary.

So you wait. Eventually, you go blind.

In the early 2000s, over 12M Indians lived like this.
But the problem wasn’t the disease.

In fact, cataract surgery is one of the most effective procedures in medicine.

The real issue was access.

Every year, almost 4M more eyes were going blind, but India was doing even fewer than 2M surgeries.

The best-selling men’s facewash in India is not Garnier, Nivea, or even Himalaya.

It’s a company you might’ve never heard of — Cetaphil!

The crazy part? They hardly advertise & don’t even have good packaging, unlike others.

THREAD: How a boring pharmacy product beat the giants 🧵Image
If you look closely at the men’s skincare market, you’ll see that men are less likely to use skincare in general.

So, the best way to sell face wash to Indian men might not be trying to lure them through commercials focusing on the target customer.
It might not be through signing Tiger Shroff or John Abraham.

Because most men just don’t buy face wash or skincare for themselves.

So, instead of going the way all other products were going, Cetaphil played it differently. Image
