Companies practice price discrimination to maximise their profits. Let’s dive deep into Price Discrimination in a thread 🧵
Price discrimination is a practice of charging different prices from different consumers to maximise their profits and capture the entire consumer surplus.
Consumer Surplus is the entire difference between what a consumer is willing to pay and what he actually paid. It’s the total benefit to the consumer when the price that he’s paying is way lesser than the one he’s willing to pay.
Suppose a consumer is willing to pay Rs.20 or Rs.15 for a small packet of Lays, but he’s getting it for Rs.10. So, it’s an overall benefit to the consumer.
But the producers always try to capture that consumer surplus by charging a higher price so that they can generate more profits from the same product.
Having market power is a necessary condition to exercise price discrimination.
Now there are three types of price discrimination:

●First-Degree Price Discrimination- Practice of charging every customer the max. price they are willing to pay.
●Second-Degree Price Discrimination- Practice of charging different prices for different quantities of the same goods & services.
●Third-Degree Price Discrimination- Practice of dividing the customers into different groups on various bases and charging them accordingly.
Profit maximization is not the only reason for this practice.

▪Companies which provide premium products use price discrimination to enhance/improve the user experience.

▪It opens up the market for lower-income users.

▪It improves the cash flow of the companies.
Following are the examples of price discrimination in daily life 💁🏻‍♂️
Professionals like Doctors, Architects, Accountants etc. charge their customers according to their income. High-income customers are charged a higher fee. Image
Companies like Amazon and Walmart provide quantity discounts to the customer. Customers have to pay a higher price for a smaller quantity than the larger quantity. Image
University students can avail discounts on iPad and MacBooks, provided by Apple. Image
Tableau is a data visualisation software that is free for students for 1 year. Image
Buses charge less from the students and the senior citizens. Image
Companies provide their products at different prices for different periods.

• Spotify charges Rs.129 for 1 month and Rs.1189 for 12 months(savings of Rs. 359)

• Trendlyne App charges Rs. 215 for 1 month and Rs. 2150 for 12 months( savings of Rs. 430) ImageImage
YouTube and Netflix charge for their premium plans for a higher quality of video and audio or better ad-free experience. Image
Airlines like Vistara, Air India, Etihad, etc. charge different prices for the economy and Business class in Air travel. They also charge a higher price for the last-minute booking than a month prior booking for the same seats. Image
Publishing both hardbound and paperback editions of a book also helps publishers to price discriminate. Image
Nescafe provides coffee in different packaging and different variants like Nescafe classic and Nescafe gold. Image
Similarly, Taj Mahal and Red label are offered by Brooke Bond as different variants in the tea leaves industry. Image
Movie theatres like PVR and Cineplex also charge a different price for the same movie, depending upon the rows and the days. Image
Indian Railways charges more for AC first tier or second tier than the third tier or the non AC compartments for reaching the same destination. Image

Nepal, once ranked the 2nd most peaceful nation in South Asia,

is now joining Pakistan, Sri Lanka & Bangladesh in crisis

Everyone thinks CIA is plotting against India

But protesters in Nepal waved Modi & Yogi’s banners

So who's really behind Nepal’s fall & should we worry?🧵 Image
Nepal’s Gen-Z revolution started on TikTok with one hashtag: NepoKids.

It was clips of ministers’ children flaunting Gucci bags and Dubai holidays that went viral.

But this isn’t envy.

It is about how ordinary Nepali youth die abroad while trying to make ends meet.
While politicians' kids flaunt the rewards of corruption.

See, during these 17 years Nepal has had 14 prime ministers.

But most leave behind a legacy of corruption scandals and zero accountability.

While the leaders grew rich, Nepal itself fell apart:

From Hollywood to Bollywood, everyone is going crazy over weight-loss drugs like Ozempic

While some call them miracles, others see them as risky shortcuts

Either way, Indian Pharma is joining the race too

But why is India betting on one of the most controversial drug ever?🧵👇 Image
Recently, you must have noticed.

Many actors, directors, comedians, and influencers who were slightly on the obese side are suddenly showing up super lean.

And not just a small 2-3 kg drop.

We’re talking about massive 15-20 kg weight loss, sharp jawlines — all within months 👀 Image
If you ask them, they’ll just say it's their workout & diet finally working.

But the buzz is everywhere that they’re on GLP-1 drugs.

In fact, Hansal Mehta (Director, Scam 1992) openly admitted to using it.

Others may not say it, but the rumours are too loud to ignore. Image

Something weird is happening in the Indian housing market 🤨

We’ll be short of 30 million homes by 2030.

Yet, India is negotiating a $500B deal to build 1 million homes in Australia!

So, why is India building homes abroad instead of fixing the housing crisis at home first?🧵👇 Image
It all starts with Australia’s desperation.

The Australian government has promised 1.2 million new homes in 5 yrs.

But construction is falling short by 25%.

Vacancy rates are just 1.2% which means only 12 homes are free for every 1,000 people looking for rental accommodation.
And in housing, vacancy rates below 2% mean very high rental demand.

At 1.2%, it’s a CRISIS.

This means millions of households are being forced into overcrowded or unaffordable rentals.

And the supply side is broken:

India just launched VIKRAM, its first indigenous 180nm semiconductor chip

And by the end of 2025, TATA will be rolling out 28-90 nm chips at scale

While everyone thinks we’re too late because the world’s already at 3nm,

India’s race to chipmaking dominance is just starting👇🧵 Image
What makes Vikram-32 remarkable is its speed of development.

Chips that often take years to develop were designed & fabricated at ISRO’s Semiconductor Laboratory in Mohali in just 3.5 years.

But why did we use a 180 nm node size when the world has long advanced to 3nm nodes?
To understand that, let’s first break down the tech behind it.

A semiconductor chip is like a microscopic city made of transistors: tiny switches that control electricity.

These switches are wired together in complex patterns to perform logic, store memory, and do computations. Image

Everyone thinks Apple’s biggest enemy is Samsung or Microsoft.

But it’s not. The real enemy is Apple’s own greed.

The result? In just 4 months, Apple has lost $1.1 trillion, falling behind Microsoft and Nvidia for the first time in years!

Here’s how Apple is killing itself🧵 Image
Remember 2007?

Steve Jobs walked on the stage in his OG black turtleneck and said:

“An iPod, a phone, an internet mobile communicator… These are not three separate devices. And we are calling it iPhone. Today, Apple is going to reinvent the phone.”

That was a revolution. Image
And that iPhone was 10 years ahead of its time & forever changed how people interact with technology and the internet.

And not just an iPhone. In less than a decade, Jobs gave the world the iMac, iPod, iPhone, and iPad.

And each one marked a new chapter in the history of tech.

Last November, Honasa posted its first ever quarterly loss of ₹19 Cr

Naturally, investors panicked and the stock plunged 50% from its 52-week high

The Crazy Part? More than ₹3,500 crore in market cap vanished in just two sessions

THREAD: How Honasa LOST its unicorn status🧵 Image
Mamaearth began with a sharp intuition about a shifting consumer psyche.

Its founders, Ghazal and Varun Alagh identified a powerful trigger among millennial parents: the fear of toxins in baby products.

So they built a brand that turned this anxiety into trust.
It was a result of years of FMCG scares.

Like Johnson & Johnson’s baby powder being sued over asbestos, a mineral whose tiny fibers can lodge in the lungs and cause cancer.

Scares like these primed parents to distrust anything without proof.
