Companies practice price discrimination to maximise their profits. Let’s dive deep into Price Discrimination in a thread 🧵
Price discrimination is a practice of charging different prices from different consumers to maximise their profits and capture the entire consumer surplus.
Consumer Surplus is the entire difference between what a consumer is willing to pay and what he actually paid. It’s the total benefit to the consumer when the price that he’s paying is way lesser than the one he’s willing to pay.
Suppose a consumer is willing to pay Rs.20 or Rs.15 for a small packet of Lays, but he’s getting it for Rs.10. So, it’s an overall benefit to the consumer.
But the producers always try to capture that consumer surplus by charging a higher price so that they can generate more profits from the same product.
Having market power is a necessary condition to exercise price discrimination.
Now there are three types of price discrimination:

●First-Degree Price Discrimination- Practice of charging every customer the max. price they are willing to pay.
●Second-Degree Price Discrimination- Practice of charging different prices for different quantities of the same goods & services.
●Third-Degree Price Discrimination- Practice of dividing the customers into different groups on various bases and charging them accordingly.
Profit maximization is not the only reason for this practice.

▪Companies which provide premium products use price discrimination to enhance/improve the user experience.

▪It opens up the market for lower-income users.

▪It improves the cash flow of the companies.
Following are the examples of price discrimination in daily life 💁🏻‍♂️
Professionals like Doctors, Architects, Accountants etc. charge their customers according to their income. High-income customers are charged a higher fee. Image
Companies like Amazon and Walmart provide quantity discounts to the customer. Customers have to pay a higher price for a smaller quantity than the larger quantity. Image
University students can avail discounts on iPad and MacBooks, provided by Apple. Image
Tableau is a data visualisation software that is free for students for 1 year. Image
Buses charge less from the students and the senior citizens. Image
Companies provide their products at different prices for different periods.

• Spotify charges Rs.129 for 1 month and Rs.1189 for 12 months(savings of Rs. 359)

• Trendlyne App charges Rs. 215 for 1 month and Rs. 2150 for 12 months( savings of Rs. 430) ImageImage
YouTube and Netflix charge for their premium plans for a higher quality of video and audio or better ad-free experience. Image
Airlines like Vistara, Air India, Etihad, etc. charge different prices for the economy and Business class in Air travel. They also charge a higher price for the last-minute booking than a month prior booking for the same seats. Image
Publishing both hardbound and paperback editions of a book also helps publishers to price discriminate. Image
Nescafe provides coffee in different packaging and different variants like Nescafe classic and Nescafe gold. Image
Similarly, Taj Mahal and Red label are offered by Brooke Bond as different variants in the tea leaves industry. Image
Movie theatres like PVR and Cineplex also charge a different price for the same movie, depending upon the rows and the days. Image
Indian Railways charges more for AC first tier or second tier than the third tier or the non AC compartments for reaching the same destination. Image

Smallcap has outperformed midcap, but midcap is preferred for stability as smallcap has high risk

So, what if we combine smallcap high-returns with midcap stability?

The crazy part? In the last 15 yrs, Nifty MidSmallcap400 gave a 2380% return while Nifty50 gave 922%

A THREAD🧵 Image
Even though they’re stable, large caps seem to have hit a ceiling and witness smaller growth compared to midcap and smallcap.

Because these are heavy machines that move slowly.
So, if you think about it, isn’t it better to invest in something that is becoming large and take a share of its growth, rather than investing in something that is already large?

Because the midcaps and smallcaps of today will become the large caps of tomorrow. Image

Shopping Malls are dying in India!

And no, online shopping is not the reason behind their decline

The crazy part? 21% of Indian malls have already turned into ghost malls & another 60% are on the way

THREAD: Why there’s been a 59% surge in ghost malls in India🧵 Image
First, let’s try and understand malls as a concept.

In the late 20th century US, the first modern malls served as social hubs — a “THIRD SPACE” between home life and work life

— where people could gather, socialize, and spend leisure time.
A space that has been filled with one thing or another ever since humanity has existed, and is now filled by social media :)

Simply put, malls were meant for socializing as much as shopping.

PM Modi was recently asked about implementing inheritance tax

Many think it will solve for India’s wealth inequality

But even with this tax in Brazil, a nation like ours, the 6 richest people are richer than 50%

THREAD: Will it fix wealth inequality or rob the middle class Image
Inheritance tax might be a bitter pill to swallow — a tax imposed on the transfer of property and assets from a deceased to their beneficiary.

The concept of inheritance tax is not American.
It was commonly used in the 17th and 18th centuries by kings in Europe to collect revenue from the common man

— on the transfer of his property to their heirs in succession.

The USA introduced it formally for the first time about 200 years ago, to fund the war against France. Image

Indians have given up cooking.

They're spending more on takeouts, food delivery apps, and processed food.

The CRAZY part? The consumption of staples like rice, wheat and pulses has gone down from 24.2% to 10.5%.

Thread: Here's why Indians are spending less on food 🧵 Image
If you want to understand someone better then look at their bills and you will find:

- What they prioritize
- What they ignore
- What they value

The same can be said when you look at a country’s bill of household expenses.
Unlike other countries, India does not conduct any periodic official income survey.

Instead, it uses the spending data as a proxy for household incomes and its distribution across different classes and demographics.

In 1974, a supermarket worker QUIT his job when he was asked to wear a tie

Later on, he went on to revolutionize Japanese clothing by making casuals the norm

And ended up becoming the RICHEST MAN IN JAPAN!

THREAD: Here’s how he built UNIQLO🧵 Image
The initial life of Tadashi was just like any one of us.

He graduated from college, but he didn't want to work with his father in his suit & tie stitching store.

So, he took a job in a supermarket.

But he didn't like it there, so he resigned and joined his father's business.
He faced difficulties there too, but enjoyed his line of work and while working for his father, he found his passion of

— selling clothes.

He came up with some big ideas and after taking over his father's business, he established his first branch of Unique Clothing Warehouse. Image
