1. So, in January, when @ATT PROMISED to cut off donations to Republicans who voted to overturn the election, it was covered by virtually every major media outlet.

@nytimes

@CNN

@Variety

@dallasnews

I could go on and on ImageImageImageImage
@ATT @nytimes @CNN @Variety @dallasnews 2. Now, 9 months later, @ATT has violated its promise

The only outlet to cover was my newsletter, Popular Information

None of the dozens of publications that covered @ATT's initial announcement have picked up the story

This seems screwed up

3. To me, if you are going to cover the corporate press release announcing a promise but not follow up when the corporation BREAKS the promise, that's not journalism. That's PR.

I doubt that's what these outlets want to do. But that's the reality of what they are doing.
4. If you are interested in a different approach, try out my newsletter.

There is a massive need for more robust and aggressive corporate accountability journalism.

Be a part of it.

The reconciliation package is a generational opportunity to address climate, the treatment of working families, and tax fairness

There is a massive lobbying campaign against it funded by virtually every major American corporation
The argument here, which I don’t think is well understood, is that America should remain the only developed country without any paid family leave because corporations don’t want to pay a penny more in taxes on corporate profits
As is so often the case, the coverage is oriented around the horse race. How will this impact 2022?

The reality is that this could have a real impact on people’s lives. It’s not a game.

1. @ATT has brazenly abandoned its pledge to not make political donations that support the Republicans who voted to overturn the election on January 6

Their strategy is to hope no one notices.

Follow along if interested.

@ATT 2. After 1/6, @ATT said it would suspend contributions to the 147 GOP objectors: "Employees on our Federal PAC Board convened a call today and decided to suspend contributions to members of Congress who voted to object to the certification of Electoral College votes this week."
3. In March, we reported that @ATT donated 5K to the House Conservatives Fund, which mostly supports GOP objectors

@ATT told popular.info that it was "assured" that none of the money would support GOP objectors

1. @Sen_JoeManchin has the pen for the climate-portion of the reconciliation bill.

This might be the best opportunity to impact climate policy for years.

But a close review of lobbying disclosures paints a disturbing picture.

@Sen_JoeManchin 2. A popular.info review of the Senate Lobbying Database found that six former Manchin staffers are currently listed on 15 lobbying contracts with fossil fuel and energy companies

Collectively, these contracts are worth $2.4 million per year

3. Jonathan Kott, formerly Manchin's communications director, was hired by a lobbying firm in June

In July, Kott was added to a 200K/year contract with the American Fuel & Petrochemical Manufacturers

Kott says he's in regular touch with Manchin

Which means we are updating popular.info's January 6 Accountability Index

2. @UPS, which suspended all donations after 1/6, had donated to a handful of GOP objectors earlier this year.

But, in August, it really kicked things into high gear.

UPS donated $78,500 to 30 Republican objectors
3. After 1/6, @Pfizer said: "[W]e have made the decision that for the next six months, Pfizer PAC will not contribute to any of the 147 Members of Congress who voted against certifying the Electoral College after the violence that we all witnessed"

1. Since 9/1, about one in ten women have effectively been stripped of their reproductive rights

That's when an extreme abortion ban went into effect in Texas — home to 7 million women aged 15-49

popular.info/p/apples-texas…
2. Many of these women are @Apple employees. Apple employs more people in Austin than any other city, save its headquarters in Cupertino.

They are finishing a new $1 billion campus in Austin that will make it the city's largest employer.

popular.info/p/apples-texas…
3. And yet, @Apple has remained publicly silent on Texas' abortion ban

In a company meeting, Cook told employees that Apple is seeing if it can assist legal challenges to the law

But its leverage is not quietly paying for lawyers. It's PUBLIC PRESSURE

1. For the last three decades there has been an unprecedented concentration of wealth among the top 0.1% of families

Biden proposed some policies to make things a bit more fair

But very wealthy people can afford very good lobbyists

popular.info/p/very-wealthy…
2. These lobbyists have convinced DEMOCRATS to kill some of the most important of Biden's proposals

For example, the House Ways and Means Committee has dropped Biden's plan to end the tax loophole for dynastic wealth

It's egregious

popular.info/p/very-wealthy…
3. Right now, extremely rich people can accumulate billions in wealth gains throughout their lifetime through capital gains from stocks and other assets

But they can avoid paying taxes by passing those assets onto their heirs
