The Art of Writing Effective Cover Letters:

When freelancing through jobsites like upwork, the cover letter is essential to get a project. #freelance

This thread shows you how to write a perfect cover letter that is appealing to your clients 🧵👇
❌ Don't talk about yourself

The client doesn't care that you are from Anartica and now live in the middle of a desert.

He doesn't care what you like, or what your dog's name is.

The client has come to you to save his time, and wasting it is the worst thing you can do.
✅ Explain How You Add Value

Every client has some pain point, or struggle, which he/she isn't able to solve.

That's why they are hiring someone.

The key is to identify the problem, and clearly outline how to fix it.

Show how you are uniquely qualified to fix the problem.
✅ Think like a client

If you are the client, would you select the person who was written the cover letter?

Address the clients problem, and give a small explanation how you would fix it.

Don't give the whole solution for free, but parts of it to show your expertise.
✅ The Client Is Your Friend

Most clients don't know web dev and want someone to handle it for them.

Be kind, and use personal touches to make the client think you are their friend(people love hearing their name).

Start with their name, talk about how great their idea is etc.
✅ Act Like You Care

People like to feel important and prioritised.

Show like you really care about their business, and you want them to succeed.

I know, I know, you don't have the time. So, fake it till you make it 😉
✅ Show The Process/Strategy

Describe your approach to the project, the strategy you have to take it from point X to point Y.

Most clients don't know how to plan and execute a website properly.

That's where you come in, so it's really important to have a plan.
❌ No Template Proposals

Template proposals are one of the worst things you can do to yourself.

Seasoned clients who have worked with freelances before can easily identify such proposals.

The client thinks that you don't have enough time for them, and feels unimportant.
✅ Skeleton NOT Template

Rewriting a proposal from scratch can be time consuming. Here's a good skeleton that's does not feel templatey:

1. Highlight Problem

2. Summary of Solution(Strategy)

3. How you add value

4. Relevant Experience

5. CTA - like "get on a call with me"
Make sure to tweak and personalise all the proposals based on the need of a client.

If it's a startup idea, say something like -

"Great Idea, that's absolutely genius. I know it's difficult to do {XYX} but that's why I'm here. I'll help you with {xyz}, {abc} and {axs}"
✅ How To Hook In The Client

Start with a great first sentence to grab their attention. It can be -

1. Do you know that 99% of startups fail in the 1st year?
2. That's a genius idea!

End with a CTA:

1. Hop on a 10 minute call with me
2. Send me a quick message
✅ A More Detailed Skeleton

1. Start with a greeting specific to the post

2. Show the client's pain point, and offer help

3. Show your experience, but make it about the client

4. Show what they get, and how does that help

5. CTA for a call/interview, without being pushy
✅ Another Strategy To Pitch Clients

Break the process into several milestones.

Show what each milestone does, when it's done, and exactly how much it costs.

Give a summary to the client about the total price and timeline.

Don't forget to account for buffer time too.
✅ Proofread, Proofread and Proofread

Once you finish writing, please read it again.

Spend at least 10 minutes editing the proposal.

Use tools like @Grammarly for grammar and spelling and @HemingwayApp for structure and complexity.
There's nothing that throws off a client like a spelling mistake or grammatical error.

How do I know? Because it throws me off too.

Spelling errors show that you are in a hurry and don't have time.

The client thinks that this same "hurry" will be present when working for him.

The Blockchain ⚡ - Explained Like You Are 5 😀!

The blockchain allows you to safely and securely transfer money without the need for a central authority or trust.

Here's a thread on what could be the greatest invention of mankind 🧵👇:

#Blockchain
1. What's the problem 🤔?

Imagine that I'm going to sell a house to my friend and he gives me a downpayment on the house before he gets ownership of the property.

What's stopping me from running away to Antarctica and using the down payment for a luxury igloo 😂?
My friend has to either trust me, or we go to a 3rd party(like escrow) which locks the downpayment until I give my friend the keys.

What happens if the 3rd party runs away with the money?

We can't really trust strangers, nor enforce a contract as that takes a lot of money.

Why should you contribute to open source?

✅ Network with people and make new friends
✅ Accommodate to large codebases faster
✅ Attractive Github Profile = Job Opportunities

I'm not asking you to dig into react internals. You can work on simple things. Here's a thread 🧵👇
1. Finding Repos

Unlike other articles who ask you to contribute to large repos like Typescript, React, Node etc, there's no shame in contributing to smaller libraries.

It can be as simple as adding a quick start tutorial to the docs, or migrating a component to typescript 😀
Assume you tried to learn redux toolkit, but you felt the quickstart guide was confusing so you had to refer to some articles online.

Now that you understand what it does, go back to the quickstart and see what it lacked.

Take notes, and we'll use it in the next step 😀
