This conference vote is a humiliating rebuke for Starmer, and yet another reason for him to drop this betrayal, and just follow through on the unambiguous promises he made to get himself elected as party leader.

Energy renationalisation is a very popular policy with the UK public, so if Starmer continues to insist on opposing it, he's not doing it for popularity, he's doing it to suck up to the mega-rich who want to keep their access to all their privatised industry money troughs.

U-turning on energy renationalisation isn't just bad news from a public opinion perspective. It demonstrates stunningly bad strategic awareness to betray Labour party volunteers and activists like this.

Under the previous leadership it was one of Labour's few real advantages over the Tories that they had such a large and energised volunteer base. But who on earth is going to enthusiastically campaign for a guy who insists on proving himself an outrageous liar?

This betrayal doesn't just look bad to Labour members either. Any sensible potential Labour voter is going to think that if Starmer lies to his own party like this to get himself elected, why on earth should they believe a word he says when it comes to a general election?

And now this rebuke from the Labour Party conference makes something else clear.

If Starmer persists with his pro-privatisation agenda now, he'll not just be proving himself a liar, he'll be defying democracy too.

Either Starmer respects this democratic vote and reverses his duplicitous U-turn on energy renationalisation, or he proves to everyone that he's a petty tyrant who simply doesn't give a damn about truth or democracy.
