Lizzie starts her day @WEHI_research checking emails, creating a to-list, and planning her experiments so they all fit in the day.
Lizzie is interested in cancer cells and how they respond to cancer treatment, let's follow along to learn more!
To conduct her research, @LizzieLieschke uses cancer cell lines pictured here, that act as a model for human cancer in the lab.
Lizzie starts in the lab by checking her cells and providing them with extra nutrients to grow, so they can be used for future experiments.
Lizzie is studying what happens inside cells, but how can we see inside a cell?
We can view these cells under a super-powered microscope and used fluorescently tagged proteins (kind of like glow sticks stuck to cell components) to visualise what might be happening inside! ๐ฌ๐ฆ
To see how these red cells respond to cancer treatments, @LizzieLieschke grew cells, exposed them to cancer treatments, and then used a scientific machine that will analyse the data!

All of this science is making us hungry, time for lunch! ๐ฅช๐๐ฝ๏ธ
Scientists like @LizzieLieschke are expert multi-taskers so during her break, Lizzie ate lunch, listened to a lecture, AND analysed data from her experiment! ๐ป๐ฅ
@LizzieLieschke mentions that being a scientist requires flexibility, good problem-solving skills, and a strong passion for science! As we saw today, being a lab researcher involves all fields of STEM from science to technology & maths #STEMforALL ๐ฉโ๐ฌ๐ป๐งฎ
