Lal Bahadur Shastri ji's orignal name was Lal Bahadur Srivastava. But he dropped his surname since he was against the caste system.
In 1926, he got the title 'Shastri' in Kashi Vidyapeeth University as a mark of scholarly success.

#LalBahadurShastri was 3 months old, he slipped out of his mother's arms into a cowherd's basket at the Ganga ghat. The cowherd, who had no children, took the child as a gift from God & took him home. He's parents lodged a complaint with the police, who traced and returned him.
Shastri ji swim Ganges twice a day to attend school and tied books on the top of the head because he didn't have enough money that time to take boat.

When his son was given an undue promotion at a department, Shastri had it reversed immediately.

During 1920s, #LalBahadurShastri joined the Indian Independence Movement, in which he participated in the non-cooperation movement. He was sent to jail for some time by the Britishers.
In 1930, he also participated in the Salt Satyagraha, and was imprisoned for more than 2 years.
In 1937, #LalBahadurShastri joined as the Organising Secretary of the Parliamentary Board of U.P.

He was again sent to jail in 1942, after Mahatma Gandhi issued the Quit India speech in Mumbai. He was imprisoned until 1946.

He had spent some nine years in jail in total.
#LalBahadurShastri became a life member of the Servants of the People Society (Lok Sevak Mandal), founded by Lala Lajpat Ral. And later became the president of Lok Seva Mandal.
In 1928, he officially joined the Congress party.

Post India's Independence, #LalBahadurShastriBahadur became the Parliamentary Secretary in U.P.

He also became the Minister of Police and Transport in 1947. As a Transport Minister, he had appointed women conductors for the first time.

Being the minister in charge of the Police Department, #LalBahadurShastri passed the order that police should use jets of water and not lathis to disperse the agitated crowds.
In 1951, he was appointed as the General Secretary of the All-India Congress Committee.
In 1952, #Shastri was elected to Rajya Sabha from U.P. Being the Railway Minister, he installed the first machine at Integral Coach Factory in Chennai in 1955.
In 1957, he again became the Minister for Transport and Communications, and then the Minister of Commerce and Industry.
In 1961, #LalBahadurShastri was appointed as Home Minister, and he appointed the Committee on Prevention of Corruption.

He created the famous "Shastri Formula" which consisted of the language agitations in Assam and Punjab.

On 9 June, 1964, #LalBahadurShastri ji became the Prime Minister of India.

#Shastri ji gave the slogan "Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan" in 1965 at a public gathering at Ramlila Maidan, Delhi to enthuse the soldiers to defend India and simultaneously cheering farmers to do their best to increase the production of food grains to reduce dependence on import.
#LalBahadurShastri ji promoted the White Revolution, a national campaign to increase milk production. He also promoted the Green Revolution, to increase the food production in India.

In 1965, the PM of India #LalBahadurShastri ji bought a Fiat car after taking a loan of Rs. 5,000 Punjab National Bank.
When his loan was approved early, Shastri ji told bank, "The common man should have the same privilege." He passed away before he could pay back the loan.
Then it was repaid by his wife Lalita Shastri from the pension she received.

#LalBahadurShastri died of a heart attack in Tashkent, Uzbekistan (then Soviet Union) on the 11th January, 1966, one day after signing a peace treaty to end the 1965 Indo-Pakistan War.

After #Shastri's death, his wife Lalita Shastri had alleged he was poisoned. An epic poetry book in Hindi titled Lalita Ke Aansoo written by Krant M. L. Verma was published in 1978. In this book, the tragic story about the death of Shastri has been narrated by his wife.
