🚨First interview with @wsj’s Facebook whistleblower tonight on @60Minutes tonight🚨

A BIG deal. The total failure to hold Facebook to account after Cambridge Analytica is coming home to roost.

How many more insurrections have to happen before we do?

Facebook is out running interference ahead of interview. Nick Clegg is on manoeuvres. Because this is serious.

So many civil society groups - including & esp @FBoversight - were involved in strenuous attempts to get FB to take action ahead of US election

nytimes.com/2021/10/02/tec…
The point is that so many academics, experts, civil rights groups were warning of exactly this.

The insurrection wasn’t some sort of black swan event impossible to predict. Facebook’s failure to take essential measures to protect against violence was pointed out *repeatedly*
It was why @FBoversight was launched. To warn the public that Facebook’s failure to act was to use @tribelaw’s words to watch ‘a coup d’etat in progress’
My phone threw up this memory yesterday. The last time a whistleblower spoke so directly, Facebook melted down.

It precipitated their biggest corporate crisis to date.

And yet. Not a single executive was held to account.
In fact, that house of cards may be about to fall. The whitewashing job that enabled Facebook to emerge from the Cambridge Analytica wreckage may yet be exposed.

And this new whistleblower brings Facebook again into the spotlight…

Pay attention to how @nickclegg is trying to deflect & divert.

I especially love how he emphasises Facebook removed ‘the original #StopTheSteal group’ conveniently glossing over all the other #StopTheStealgroups Facebook did nothing about. Including the one Steve Bannon was in
And here it is: the Nick Clegg defence in full. This is why they pay him the big bucks.

Social media doesn’t kill people. People kill people.

It’s a direct lift from the NRA school of media management. And if that all Facebook has left, it should be very very worried indeed
Starts in half an hour. Meanwhile…

Ok. Here’s a thought. Could someone at @facebook tell us what’s happening?
It’s like ‘Here’s a news story we didn’t like, have a 5,000-word blog post from @nickclegg.’ But wipe out half the planet’s ability to communicate &:
Last observed sighting of Mark Zuckerberg yesterday as a whistleblower accused his company of ‘moral bankruptcy’:

Congrats & bravo to the Facebook whistleblower @FrancesHaugen_.

8 complaints to SEC.

Documents handed to 5 state attorney generals

Evidence to Congress on Tuesday

Scheduled to appear before UK parliamentary committee this month
Read @WSJ piece by @JeffHorwitz who broke the story.

What’s staggering is that she found these docs on Facebook’s ‘Workplace’ forum accessible to any of its 63k employees.

She methodically & systematically copied them & approached a whistleblowing lawyer
wsj.com/articles/faceb…
‘I believe in truth & reconciliation,’ she says. ‘We need to admit reality. The first step of that is documentation.’

I 💯agree with this.

(It’s why I’ve banged on forever about necessity of getting access to the data from EUref. Facebook simply buried it.) Image

I’m with @jason_kint. The stench coming off the Facebook/Cambridge Analytica SEC settlement is only getting stronger. And this relationship between Zuck & Thiel is only the half of it. Big Theranos energy
I keep thinking about what one of the earliest Facebook whistleblowers @sandyparakilas told me in 2018: pay attention to the financial filings. ‘The SEC has real powers. You can get away with most things in America,’ he told me. ‘But you can’t fuck with our capitalism’
Facebook has helped elect authoritarians & incited an insurrection & actual genocide all with zero consequences. But…In last 2 years, an increasing body of evidence suggests it may have gone a step too far & *gasp* misled investors: America’s only true sin

Criticise the behaviour, not the individual, they say. So here goes:

1) The abuse of children is morally repugnant & wholly unacceptable.

2) Online abuse *is* abuse. It must be called out. And it should be reported. It is subject to laws that can & must be enforced.

1/
3) Everyone has a right to be protected from harassment, abuse and hate speech. Victims shouldn't have to speak up for themselves. You can report it on their behalf.

4) It is a misconception that what happens online is somehow above and outside of the law. It is not.
2/
5) Organisations that employ individuals who engage in targeted hate speech, abuse and harassment have a responsibility to the victims.

6) 'Blue-ticked' or verified accounts or individuals who have a public profile play an outsized role in inciting violence online.

The @observeruk published evidence from @chrisinsilico & @shahmiruk that suggested Facebook, Cambridge Analytica, Vote Leave & LeaveEU broke the law. The official regulators used evidence to find them in breach of law.

We committed journalism. Vote Leave committed a crime
Cummings refused to answer qs to parliament on his role in illegal overspending scheme, on illegal coordination of Leave campaigns, on illicit scraping of voter data, on secret ‘physicists’. Instead, man who was once most powerful in Britain is reduced to trolling me on Twitter
Cummings is desperate to exculpate himself from utter catastrophe that led to 152k deaths. And rewrite history of EUref.

But he can’t. You can’t bring people back to life. You can’t change facts. These were findings in law. Vote Leave appealed, failed & finally admitted guilt

Andrew Neil employs Farage. It’s his channel that gives him a platform he would not otherwise have & which enabled him to launch his attacks on the RNLI. The utter hypocrisy of this.
So is that it? Neil will get a free pass for this? Just like he got a free pass for being chair of the Spectator while senior political interviewer for BBC? Just like he got free pass for denying AIDS & publishing Hitler’s diaries & hanging out with Orban’s cronies. Extraordinary
Farage is just Farage. A busted flush, too toxic even for talk radio, until rescued by GBNews. The responsibility for RNLI culture war is entirely on Andrew Neil.
