King Abdullah came to DC looking for US support for a “step-for-step” process testing the Assad regime’s commitment to any sort of reforms that would address underlying causes of the conflict.
Apparently, the Biden admin was skeptical, but did not publicly advise against such an approach.
Now we are seeing the entirely predictable results. Jordan and others offer steps forward. The Assad regime pockets the gains and takes no reciprocal steps of its own.
This is not conditional normalization. This is the full bore legitimation of a regime that must still be held accountable for its conduct during the conflict.
Time now to make very clear to Jordan the failure of “step-for-step,” and the importance of rejecting any kind of normalization without accountability and meaningful, substantive movement to address root causes of the conflict.
